Blue Angel rides it in

Having lived @ Annapolis for a decade and a half, one of the annual must do events was the Blue Angels airshow @ the Naval Academy graduation, absolutely incredible skills and an all American display of might. Today in Tenn while practicing for a show tomorrow one of the blue Angels pilots experienced a failure. In what had to be a split second decision, Captain Kuss decided not to eject from his F18 because of a school, housing project etc that the plane would likely have hit. Instead he rode it into the ground to insure that didn't happen.

Godspeed Captain Kuss

Same thing happened in Niagara Falls when I was a kid. Two planes collided.

Not as tragic, but incredibly coincidental. A USAF Thunderbird crashed just hours before.

That one the pilot ejected.

I remember the Blue Angel crashing at the Lake Charles National Airshow back in the 70,s.

A few years later, I was working the Airshow and was the first to spot a brake fire on one of the Thunderbird F16 after he had landed from a test flight.

In an even stranger coincidence it was Blue Angel 6 AND Thunderbird 6 that crashed yesterday....

Tragic, but from what you've pointed out Uncle D, it could have been far worse! Unbelievable courage! What a stud! True and total awareness. Bless You Capt. Kuss!

Grew up with fleet week in San Francisco and the Blue Angels. Still remember my chest getting frapped as they practiced a, no long allowed, low altitude pass over Crissey Field. Just overwhelmingly awesome! These guys are not only amazing aviators, but now obviously, amazing human beings! God Speed Capt. Kuss. Firewall-it!

These guys are truly amazing. An f18 is 1200 mph aircraft. Watching them balance that aircraft @ nearly a stall with gear down, hook down, moving about 15-20 mph wing tip to wing tip and then seconds later, doing an extremely low-over water pass @ speed under the RT 450 Severn River bridge with the water picking up behind them due to the suction created (they don't let them do that anymore) left the audience awestruck. @ Annapolis they allow you to watch from your boat in the river, which is where the airshow takes place. The midshipmen practice ships cordon off the area where they will get right down close to the waters surface. We were usually close enough to see the pilots face and read their names just below the canopy when they came over inverted.

Picture this but add passing under a low bridge

a good watch- one of the lines is kind of shocking
These are the oldest F18's in the fleet-destined for the boneyard

Those guys must have hand control that would make a brain surgeon jealous.

Very sad to hear about the crashes but also pretty incredible to hear how Cpt Kuss had the split second ability to go down with the plane. RIP.

I've seen the Blue Angels perform several times at Oceana Virginia Beach.
It's truly amazing what those pilots can do.
I'd encourage anyone to go out of your way to attend a BA performance.

Godspeed Cpt Kuss

My BIL is a retired F16 pilot and shared with me a lot of the exercises....ironically, we discussed at length during an air show we attended. It's crazy what they can do.
