BaT: Bring a Trailer experience

I have been toying with the idea of selling my '97 Arles 90. Disclaimer: This, however, is not a for sale ad. Rather a description of my experience.

After the white '95 sold there (referenced in another thread) for a decent amount, I thought I would reach out to BaT. The "application" process was fairly straightforward. If you are curious about those questions I will let you apply for yourself.

I was contacted in a day or so, where they expressed interest saying they thought "it would be a good fit at the right price" (This would take on greater meaning later). I had already stated what I would have liked for a reserve in the initial application process. They were also curious about a few things like if it had been in an accident, if the sunroof was aftermarket, how much fluids it leaked , etc. They also asked me to send in more pictures and a PDF of the Carfax I have from when I bought it. I sent them well over 40 descriptive pictures.

Anyhow, they were very responsive and emails flew fast and furious. Towards the end of the negotiation they stated they thought they could list it at XX,XXX reserve. Now I know my 90 fairly well - its the third I have owned so am familiar, its foibles and its mileage. To be clear I have not owned it long enough to be emotionally attached (my 110 and Series demand attention too!) so was not offended by what they thought the reserve should be. Not in the emotional sense anyway. My perception was that they knew little about Defenders and after consulting NADA they wanted the reserve to be the amount NADA called out to be low retail. I also understand you can't be an expert in all cars. Anyway, we discussed the reserve and since I felt I was taking all the risk with the reserve they preferred, walked away and thanked them for their time. Hint: you will not see it listed there anytime soon.

That was the experience. Pretty straightforward. Would I go through this trouble to list another car, perhaps something a bit more in line with what they have posted in the past? Absolutely. They were professional, responsive and currently a great alternative to the other sites out there. Call it instant credibility for your car.

Well, that about sums it up. Have a great evening.

Unfortunately recently they have featured some real garbage on the site. I have lost alot of respect for the quality of vehicles that are shown there.

The commenting section has also devolved to a bunch of old fucks talking about how they used to own the car being sold and how thiers was so much better. It's like warm and fuzzy story time for some real collectors and experts and a shit ton of wannabes

Wow, interesting feedback. I have been noticing many of these same type issues. I have decided the 90 is going on eBay. It has its issues, but house remodel demands as much as I can honestly get.

Damn didn't you just get this from Hans last year? Have you thought of trying here since it seems to have sold here successfully the last time?

Stalker. I thought about it. Its for sale. But once again, this is not a for sale thread. And he didn't post it. I won't go into details but I ended up with it because I was honest in my intentions. I.E. not a flipper. I bought the 90 in March, then bought a house in August, and want the funds (how many threads have i seen like this and thought " I wouldn't sell my 90") for a remodel. The 110 might well be going as well - haven't gotten there yet. Leaving me with my first, a Series. TBH, if I can't get my reserve, I will keep it and save for a few years. I think you can relate, you just didn't need to sell your 90.

Yeah I see it on eBay. Looks solid. Arles and 1997 are both desirable so I'm sure it'll fetch something good. I'd be pissed if I had to sell mine, but we've discussed it and she knows I'd have to get an older Series or something else to replace it.

Thanks.

Series are a ton of fun. Even the "I am driving the D90 smile" doesn't compare. I used to live in the valley and getting into mountains was a PITA. Now that I live in the mountains, the Series is perfect!

Best thing to do is list it on eBay or Craigslist, then have someone recommend it to BaT. This happened when I sold my 107. Got tons of free exposure at no cost on BaT. Haven't visited the site in a while, so don't know if things have changed.
