Barbour and Land Rover

It looks like Barbour and Land Rover paired up on some marketing.

How about this for a Range Rover advert. Amazing parking job, that you couldn't duplicate if you tried.

An older what? Did you pick up a Beaufort jacket?

Yes. Not sure what year it is, but it's definitely 'older' and brings back many memories of living in the UK.

I have to agree, those Barbour jackets suit the new Rovers.

Used Barbour jackets and Defenders sell for a lot more here in the USA than in the UK!

Does it have the authentic wet dog smell??

I have a 20 plus year mulberry wax jacket from before they went out of business and we're reborn as a lifestyle brand!

How bad are the new beauforts? Mine is 20 years old and looking it. Was thinking of getting a new one for around town and keep the old one for field wear.

They are all still decently made. I bought a new Barbour duffle this year in the UK and it's well made.

I think the new Beauforts are just fine. I certainly wouldn't get a vintage one over a new one. Mine is 10 years old, has been back to Barbour for a refurb, and has that comfy old chair look. Occasionally I'll look at the new ones and can't tell the difference in quality.

The Beaufort and the Bedale are analogous to the Defender in the LR lineup.

No but I am sure I could get it to smell if that adds to the value...lol

IMO if you cant find a lightly used Barbour with the proper wax proofing the shelter cloth filson in the next best thing. New Barbour products are the equivalent of the RR Evoque.

what exactly is a 'lifestyle brand'?...

Funny thread, my Better Half just bought me a new Bedale to re-place/augment my 20+yr old one. Essentially, the same jacket except for a few details and no smell.

I may be the odd guy out here but I like the Evoque, wouldn't buy one, but I have driven them, do like them...and they sell. Like when the Panamera came out...purists scoff, but the accountants like the margins (on sales).

My two grumpy cents on "Lifestyle Brand"

Lifestyle brand is when a company decides to run their show based on selling things strictly relying on their past products reputation. Rather than focusing on the actual products design and attributes. Instead of engineers and designers having any say, the marketing people and accountants have the final word. So typically everything shifts to made in china, quality goes to shit, ads become glossier, and you see their stuff in pop culture. Next step - the discount bin.

Bean counters love this because it justifies their being. -Profits go up. Meanwhile you know that the company is now just riding a wave of popularity and will soon crash into the ocean floor. Right before this happens the higher ups all jump ship, taking their huge bonuses and pension packages.

So basically -don't fall for this shit, Live YOUR lifestyle. Support the little guy. See through the gloss. Unless your lifestyle is gloss.

~Steve
