Back me off the ledge!

Hello all!

I am a new poster to the forum, but I have been watching your work for about a year now. I would say I am still a newbie when it comes to Defenders, so I am looking for your help.

I am currently living in the UK, coming back to the states in 2017. I am looking for a 110, 4 dr, 200TDI or better with not very much required to make it a great daily driver back home.

I found a GREAT looking 110 in Belgium (just a short ferry ride for me). Here is the posting:

AutoScout

I've reached out to her for more details and she sent me this youtube video with more photos/info

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=10&v=zr2SQKCPP_o

Obvious issues:

It's an '85 body with a 300TDI? Clearly not original....
The vin number for the chassis from the video came up as a 2011 link

So I am fear the answer is "NO WAY" but I want your expertise. Can you guys confirm that there is NO CHANCE on importing this puppy?

If that's the case, for only 4500Euro, I could have a fun ride in the UK for the next 2 years, flip if for a good price and then put that money into a possible import. Any thoughts to what this could fetch in the UK with the seemingly newish motor and chassis

I would welcome any amazing news, but expecting the worse...Let's start there...

Also, not sure this is where this thread should go, so please move it where you'd like!

Thanks!

Beautiful, but the vin WILL BE A PROBLEM for U.S. importation. Plenty of 300's stateside. Just not in California.

I'd buy it and enjoy it. Then sell it in a couple of years before you return. I don't know if you're going to make any money on the deal, but I also don't think that you'll lose any either. Then buy a 1992 rust free 110 out of Germany, Spain, or Italy and import it.

But..........If you're risk averse in the slightest;

What you are dealing with here is a scam. This vehicle was for sale here in the U.S. Within the past few years. From what I recall the vehicle was sold by A forum member here out of NC (where some of those pics were taken) then went down to TX or somewhere around there. Get an actual photo and the vehicle then do a google image search, and the old listing should show up.

A scam from the Southern (French part) of Belgium??? Nooooo not possible

Although, I admit it being less obvious than the usual Eastern European countries.

The biggest scam is how awful they routed that exhaust.

That cage. I've seen that cage. Wasn't that one of the vehicles that was seized and recently liberated?

There it is. Yes, all of that. Hence my "out of NC" comment. Glad someone found it - can't do the cool google image search from my phone.

Even with the ugliest cage ever which looks like it was built by Big Sky Rover, that's not a 4500 Euro Rover on either side of the Atlantic. No way. Scam.

There ya go, Clark (timewilltell)! Those in the know have spoken. It's true that it is a highly scammed vehicle type, I guess even in Europe. Sorry I advised buying it, although I would never expect you to be foolish and fall for a remote purchase scam. Eyes on, cash and title in hand, no electronic deposit to the seller, test drive and inspection, etc. is the only way to buy anything, let alone deals to good to be true.

HAHAHA YOU GUYS ROCK!

I'm going to just slip back into my observer mode and watch you master do your craft some more!

Here was the infamous SCAM email that I got back today.

Do enjoy:

Hi again,

The car is currently located in Valletta, Malta... Because of the limited time at my disposal, it's impossible for me to handle the selling process on a daily basis and for that reason I placed my car in custody of the transportation-company. Therefore, in case we come to an agreement, the transporter has to follow the contractual directives and deliver the car at your location with a 10-day time period for a pre-purchase inspection.

"Delivery will take approximately 2-4 working days and all the necessary documents so you can legally transfer ownership into your name will be provided together with the car. You don't have to pay anything extra, all shipping and handling charges are included in the selling price of the car.

Please let me know if you're still interested and I will explain in more detail the acquisition process.
Patricia"

I've alerted AutoScout and continued my search onto the next one. I sure hope I haven't burned my only "first impression" post!

Thanks guys!
