Back from DC

Just got back from the DC area for the holidays. How come every time I'm out there all I see are Range Rover sports and tricked out LR3/4's ? (Although we did see a nice Ferrari 360 spider).

Gee I don't know, dude. I see a D90 and a SII 109 every day. Where were you hanging out? Sounds like maybe a more upscale neighborhood than mine. There are quite a few real Land Rovers around DC that I can think of, some have gone away over the years but alot of them are still around.

All of mine are currently broken, so you woulda missed 'em.
Next time make sure you include a third Thursday in your itinerary so you can come to Happy Hour. If you're old enough, that is.

This place is crawling with interesting vehicles. Saw an Evoque yesterday, and I've seen more than one Icon. Ferraris are a dime a dozen.

My favorite is the random supercar in the 'burbs.

In Reston, I've seen an R8 convertible and both a black and yellow gallardo. I have seen several Ferrari 599's in Fairfax. Several Bentley Continentals and one Rolls Ghost.

Overseas military contractor + 1.5x overtime + no US taxes + no wife + no kids = supercar!

I was just in DC too and I don't think I saw a single Defender or Series this time either.

Just north and east of there is a fairly wealth area. Tons of Euro autos.

Saw an F430 in Mclean 2 days ago, R8 on South Glebe yesterday (must have been lost). There's an early defender 3 blocks from me that's shoved into a single car garage -- only seen the back end of it once and the garage door has been blocked with crap for months. Keep meaning to go knock on the door.

You weren't in the right neighborhood. DC has the highest concentration of exotic cars outside of NY and LA. The Dupont, Marriott, and Matsuda car collections are all based in DC. I've been inside nondescript warehouses in VA and MD with the rarest of rare cars parked one after the other (think 2 of only 13 pontoon TRs, Ueno Clinic F1 GTR, 250 GTOs, Stratos etc). Heck, if you'd showed up for the regular Great Falls C&C you would have seen at least an F40 and at least 10 other Ferraris.

Arjun - when I get back we need to discuss why I have not accompanied you to said nondescript warehouse .

Isn't that just Bobeck's new garage?

I am moving to Alexandria for a 6 month stint later this month. I will need to visit this warehouse also.

Do you need legal counsel to sit overseas and collect a paycheck?

Please say that it's not US taxpayers paying $385K per year...

I don't think there are any 250 GTOs in this area - Marriott doesn't have one, as I recall. There was that rebuilt 250 owned by Wang, but that used to be a 330GT or 250 GTE.. If there is one local, I need to join the FCA and see it..

There are at least 3 D-90's in North Sterling - Loudoun County (Clay's green one, a white one near him and an Arles Blue two blocks from me). But they are all overshadowed by the way-cool and ultra-rare Stage One. Once you get out west there are more barns that have rotting D-90's and Series tucked away (think Middleburg and Leesburg). ... Oh... and Charles has his fleet of D-90's in South Riding.

Most folks do not daily drive them - too tall for some parking garages in the big city. (For me, the RHD is a PIA to badge in and out of tight spaces)

Dupont has one as does Matsuda.

If you think there is a one of a kind car in DC, multiply that by 5 and you'll get close to the real number. 5 years ago, i thought there was only 1 Miura in the area - I now know of 7 in the area. Unfortunately many are in private collections that seldom come out.

I am constantly amazed at the quality of cars here.

I see some cool stuff around Raleigh from time to time.

I see way more pasta rockets than Defenders.
