ATF as diesel injector- engine cleaner?

A mechanice friend has been telling me for years that the best injector and basic engine cleaner for a diesel is a little ATF. He said I should fill the fuel filter with ATF next time I change it and it will do wonders for cleaning my engine. Anyone here done this? Seems like a cheap fuel additive.

Yes I have. It worked on my 79 mercedes 5 cylinder. Reduced smoke, ran smoother.

Scott,

Did you use it as routine maintenance or just as a one time thing to reduce smoke etc? BTW are you a member of SOLAROS?

Yes routinely, I did it to reduce pinging caused by lower sulfur diesel that my old merc didn't like, it is cheaper than redline and I am told it is a good lubricity additive. I have no long term data to support my claim other than my own observations.

Yes I am a SOLAROS member.

It is not supposed to be a good idea in a modern direct injection engine. There are additives in the ATF, which will not fully burn and leave residues. For old style indirect injection engine, it was OK, but this is not 1950 any more.

Power Service is the cheapest, easiest to find, quality DFC.
