Why cant you just hang your ass over the side of your swingy tent thing?
believe me, there were times when I was on the side of mountains where i would have loved to do that, just for the pure scientific aspect of it.

but the climbing community is a serious LNT community. for example, decades ago when someone figured out that using pitons hammered into the side of rock wall faces were actually damaging the landscape climbers everywhere stopped using pitons just like that. and instead, the most clever protection devices (or pro) were invented such as cams.

and here in connecticut, there's been chop wars going on for years (that's a practice where someone tries to bolt a route up a rock wall with hangers and bolts, requiring much less pro to carry up a wall; the hangers and bolts are then sledge hammered off the rock or chopped by usually someone remaining anonymous so no one can use the bolts and hangers). purists say that it damages the rock, promotes traffic, and ruins the ecology.

oh the details...

well kind of. when you're doing multi-day climbs like Emily here, you're going to have a haul bag. so you'll climb first and then when you're done for the day, you anchor, bring up your haul bag, unpack your portaledge, setup your portaledge, then poop. There's a lot more moves here than I've described because it does take some orchestration between the lead climber and the follower (for example, when they switch roles, when the haul bag is brought up, etc). it's not uncommon to have two haul bags (one for clean supplies, the other for waste) if you don't have a ground support crew like what the guys had for the Dawn Wall climb.

I would love to do that, but I am not good with heights. I love the idea and the physical and mental challenge of it, but I won't do much more than a climbing gym.
