Anyone here a Saab guy?

I am seeking advice on a Saab purchase. I am looking at picking up a 9-5 Wagon, 2000-2003 The prices are pretty cheap for a low mileage car. I need a decent wagon to haul the kids (occasionally) and my work kit. My P38 is rejecting its Becm at the moment and I need to get into something else.

What should I be looking out for?

They still make Saab? I used to love the older body style in my 20's...

I guess.. I think GM ruined them, then pulled out of NA. My mother had a 73' 99 when I was a kid. That thing was a tank. I dated a girl who bought a new 9-3 in 1999, I always thought it was a solid car, rather sprite for what it was.

At least you have The old Acton Saab as a place got service nearby!
But how is the parts availability? My sense is the number of Saabs on the road is dropping rapidly.

Yeah, the last model before it bellied up was pretty cool looking, unfortunately I see fewer and fewer of them every year... So much so I actually note when I see a saab on the road

I like the way they look, it seems to me that since the dealer network is nla it is driving the price down . low mileage cars are cheap, plus I think they, especially a wagon lived a rather pampered life, as opposed to a volvo. Since I'm not interested in dealer service I'm not too worried.

Hi Chris, hope you are well.

I was a SAAB guy for years and my Parents still have one. My Convertible was on of my favorite cars.

Piece of cake for an old pro like you

They are quirky, but the engines are pretty durable. There was a sludging issue around the timeframe you are talking about, but I do not think it affected the 9-5's. A quality syn oil is a must for the turbos. Switches, trim, etc. seemed to go down in quality level during the early GM years and the cars also seemed to get a bit softer, less 'European' in feel, but they turned around in the last few years. The last 9-3's, especially the AWD ones are very nice cars.

Safe & solid car for the family. With the current prices you may want to look at the later AWD wagons.

Good luck.

Funny this comes up as a friend and I were just last night lamenting selling our 900's years ago. Wouldn't mind getting a clean 900turbo one day. Awesome cars to drive.

I wouldn't mind getting a 900 classic turbo. Had a '80 5 door in college (which was a great config). Then a '87 9000T 5 door, then a '93 900S 3dr. The 900s seemed to run hot and the trannys are on the weaker side but they would rip thru snow and held a lot of gear in the hatchback config. Actually slept in the back if the 900 a few times. Not a crazy fast car but the turbo's went pretty good and the handling wasn't bad. And they always look right with a Thule (Yakima if on the west coast) rack system up top.

How about no. The last TDI Passat wagon was the B5/ 5.5. Only someone who hated the person would recommend one. The B6 was a better car all around but those are probably out of the price bracket. The 9-5 is a better car than a B5.5 all day long. More power, better ride, more room, cheaper to maintain and own.

Don't these require un-syncing old and syncing new BUS-connected modules to the vehicle? I know they started that stupid system around that time. I wouldn't touch a car with that system with a ten foot pole. Not sure the 9-5 has it or not.
