Anyone Else Have an issue with the Demise of the Manual Transmission?

I hate that so few vehicles are available with manual transmissions anymore (an no, I don't consider a dual clutch a manual gearbox!).

I don't really care if the latest tech autos are faster, or get better fuel economy. There is a very important element of driving pleasure that is lost for me..

I've had the link to Car and Driver's "Save the Manuals' campaign in my signature for a long time. But came across these shirts and decals, and thought I'd share. Figure there have to be a few others on this board that feel the same way..

Hmmm, the link indicates they will do specific patterns. Wonder if you upload them an image if they'd do that..

Yes, it makes me sad that manual gearboxes are so hard to come by in new vehicles.

My new F-Type now comes as a manual, only issue is I'll have to wait ten years to be able to afford

My brother made a sticker back in '95 that read: "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Automatics."

I should ask him to do a new run of them...

I'm staying in a hotel this week for work, and the valet has a warning on my key tag that says: *STICK*

I guess even the valet business doesn't require this skill of their employees anymore.

I wish I could swap an F-type manual trans into my super V8. Even Porsche has taken away manuals from its good 911s. Ferrari has not made a real manual in years. A big part of the reason I bought my sportwagen was it was a manual. Audi tdis did not have manuals even thought it was basically the same car!

We are down to some inexpensive cars, a subset of sports cars, and the Ram pickup at this point.

Think of the demise as a form of theft deterrence. Between the key being on the wrong side and the manual who can steal it?

Those are a good find. It's a shame that the manuals are going away. Autos and airplanes are becoming more and more like video game entertainment...It takes so much away from the true pleasure of operating one!! The majority of our cars are manual, and I find that I always gravitate to the older/more basic ones!! It's just such a better driving experience!! The 2 I prefer the most don't even have radios!

I'd say 25% of the time we drive my wife's GTI to a place with valet they have to call over the 1 guy who can drive stick to park it.

My dad insisted all 3 kids learn on a manual. I don't own one but I do enjoy driving my mom's BMW when I'm at home.

First time driving with my Dad, he parked parallel on a fairly steep hill, and asked if I wanted to drive? 3 on the tree chevy 6 cyl to boot...
I had no idea how to work the auto (push button) in the driver ed car- never had seen one. How things have changed.

My wife was giving the valet grief the other night as he had to pass on pulling up her car. She asked him how he was a valet and couldn't drive a stick. She then offered to teach him right there...needless to say he was a bit embarrassed.

My safety inspection guy can't drive manual, I had to drive the 90 into the shop. I took the S1 in for inspection and he didn,t even bother. He walked around it in the car park then handed me a pass sheet. He can't even drive right hooker.

I first learned on a 3 in the tree. My next lesson was on snow and ice.

But if you can start up on a steep incline with a manual, you are king of the hill. I've seen that to be a big challenge for many people here in Austin.

Reminds me of how my old man made me learn how to drive on a mid 60's GMC 3/4 ton - 4 speed manual and no power steering. If I was backing up I had to use the mirrors otherwise I would get a flick to the arm. But like he said if I could drive that thing I could drive most anything.

Makes me sad seeing so many less manuals on new cars. If I think of the best drives I have had its always been in a manual: high speed runs in the S4 coming back home from VT and OH, taking my father in laws 996 convert for a spin in Key Largo, driving the Saab 900 all over New England and NYC, and bringing the 90 to different spots to wheel. On the flip side the Suburban has covered way more miles but the drives sort of blend into each other.
