Anybody heard of a Matra Rancho?

I'm guessing it's a POS. Definitely stole most of the design from Land Rover.

From Wikipedia: "The Matra Rancho is a leisure activity vehicle created by the French engineering group Matra, in cooperation with the automaker Simca, to capitalize on the off-road trend started by the Range Rover. The Rancho provided an "off-road look" at a lower price."

Looks like a spawn from the unholy mating of a Ford Pinto Spider and a Disco...

Matra Simca Rancho: As it was known in England then later the Talbot Rancho
Matra Rancho: Chrysler Europe’s Car-Based SUV

Always had a soft spot for those. But I never saw or heard of a soft sided variant so think thats an aftermarket conversion.
A friend of mine runs a land rover / range rover specialty repair shop. Based on his experience, they are capable of stopping anywhere, anytime, at any cost.

I don't know about the brakes, only their unreliability.

IIRC, they were only 2 wheel drive. Pretty big mistake IMHO. I remember them when they first came out- pretty cool. Most rusted away to nothing.
