Agreed! Most people will always choose, if they can afford it, to look gentry. Or rather, like they've always been rolling in it. Classics never go out of style!

Did anyone see the CBS Sunday Morning story on Shinola out of Detroit? Supposedly "resurrecting" quality workmanship and fine goods. Their watches look decent: Watches | Free Shipping + Free Returns on Shinola Watches | Shinola®

But seems more like a gimmick to me...

Filson is also promoting Shinola with a line of watches. I have seen them in person. They are nice but I don't like buying watches that have little to no resell value.

Filson and Shinola are both owned by Bedrock Brands, a privately held conglomerate founded by the co-founder of Fossil Watches.

The company that owns Filson also owns Shinola. The watches are assembled in Detroit from largely overseas components. I'm a huge supporter of made in America but Shinola is stretching it a bit by their built in Detroit... I do support what they are doing and anyone creating jobs in somewhere as troubled as Detroit is worthy of our support. I just hope that they further integrate their manufacturing vertically in the same location and bring high skill manufacturing jobs as well as the assembly jobs they do today.

might be gimmicky; but for Detroit's sake...I hope it helps them.

Now, after watching CBS Sunday, at least now I can say that I know s#it from Shinola!

Ninja please. Those $10K Apple Watches will be on eBay for $300 in five years time. I don't track the luxury watch market but last I checked, my Submariner had nearly doubled in value since I bought it in 2009. It may have come down since then but it will always be worth something north of the original retail price.

I also have a Rolex 50th anniversary Submariner 16610 LV that turned out to be more photogenic than I anticipated. I'll probably trade it in for a Rolex Explorer II (216570 polar), and eventually would like to have a Jaeger Lecoultre Master Ultra Thin Moon 39 as a dress watch and an Omega Grey Side of the Moon to round out my rotation.

The goal is to have watches match vehicles: Polar/diver for a D90, GSOTM/JLC for a 993 4S. Some day the cars and watches will happen. I'm not hugely into material things except discontinued cars and new watches.
I've been on TRF for quite a few years under the same username...I've been a watch junky just about as long as I've been an auto, motorcycle and airplane junky!! Pretty much anything I can spend $$ on!!

I will tell you boys the marketplace:

2 1/2 years ago my oldest daughter graduated high school. All she wanted was "a nice watch", I bought her a new Rolex; pink face, blah, blah blah...loves it..

The NEXT year, her twin sisters wanted NOTHING to do with a watch, " God Dad we have a phone, who needs a "stupid watch"...we ended up buying them pretty nice David Yurman bracelets as a graduation gift...

And right now, they are both so jealous of their oldest sister's watch and NEVER wear that stupid DY bracelet....

I'm telling you, outside of some dumbass "in" watch, you will never go wrong buying or gifting a nice mechanical time piece....

It's like a Defender, never buy it as an investment but sometime you, or your heirs, might get lucky...

And that's all I hafts say about that...

I heard the I has only 8 hrs of battery life… what good is a watch that only last 8 hrs?!? The average person is awake for 16 hrs.

I've never understood the appeal of Rolex watches until I tried a friend's on. It just feels right.
