Any Spud / Potato Gun Aficionados?

The Potato gun broke this Summer when the neighbor's kid dropped it on some rocks. It had given many years of loyal service. I have some extra spark plugs and wires, and was thinking of using them this time around in building a new one, but they are kind of heavy. Do any of you guys build your own potato guns? I'm looking to make some changes this time around, and want to take some of the best ideas from multiple builds.

Some things I'm thinking of:

-I'm thinking of going the see-through PVC route this time, but I just need to confirm that I can find the type that can take the forces of the combustion.
-When we use the potato gun it is usually fired straight up (don't ask, but it's a drunk game, that the grown ups actually came up with). Thinking of putting a level on it to at least give the shooter one axis.
-Has anyone come up with a better/quicker way to seal up the chamber than just the screw on back?

I was at hockenheim GP once and a bunch or Germans had a V8 on a trailer with an 8 into 1 manifold that the rigged as a potato launcher ... Maybe you should start modifying your truck ...

Although these are fun, there was a guy from my hometown killed when the rear cap blew off and hit him while standing behind the shooter. The cap hit him square in the chest over his heart and that was it. Be careful with fire and explosives.

I would be careful about discussing these on a public forum.

Do you read Make magazine? Check out back issues from like 4-5 years back - they had an issue on potato gun how to.

Some friends and I had a bad experience with dry ice, which was enough to steer me away from home made explosives and weapons. Don't be a pussy, and just buy a real rocket launcher.

Josh I think this is what you want, ref Make magazine feature: clear PVC cannon, works off of a stun gun. Do this and report back!

It has been a while since I played with one. But I used Coleman lantern igniters at one point. They use flint and you only need one hole. Clear PVC can be had and works. The last time I built one was 18 years ago...

Find a push-button style grill starter and use that for ignition

I once built one using one of those trigger pull grill igniters. I built it from plans for one with the coleman lantern lighter, but we were young, couldn't tell Mom what we needed to go to the store for and had it handy...it seemed kind of cool to have a trigger for it!

They're a lot of fun, a friend of mine had a gigantic one, mine was more portable but it'd launch a spud a couple hundred yards!

If I was doing it again, I'd use a spark plug and a button for a trigger, but that's the last thing I need to be spending time on. haha

Whatever you do, just be careful, they're a lot of fun, but they can be very dangerous both to you and those around you.

I've made a few of them, got weber grille ignitors, and pvc piping, it was pretty self explanatory. I could see how they would be frowned upon in NYC :D
