Not too sure what I think of this.

I'm not the biggest sports car fan, but I do enjoy watching it. I'm not exactly sure why ALMS decided to do this because it seems Grand Am has nothing really to bring to the table, aside from the Daytona 24. I'm pretty nervous that ALMS could morph into Grand Am, which I wouldn't consider prue road-racing.

Probably a money issue for ALMS. My hope is that LMP and GT are left alone and have the teams from GrandAm run in the Challenge category since they are a lower cost spec class. I was and am still hoping that with Toyota getting back into Prototype's again that Audi and them will come over and race in the US again.

Figured I'd bring this back from the dead today since the announcement of the new classes was made. Really don't like the direction they've taken, still too jumbled up. Keep the # of classes down and the structure of each class clear

There's a few wierd things going on with sports cars right now....besides the merger, which I can't wait to see how their going to classify the the DP's with the P1's!
But the most bizarre to me is that goofy ass DeltaWing.....that thing looks as if it should be at the Bonneville salt flats trying to break some speed record!

This design initially was to be the new champ (Indy) car! UUUHHH!

Can't wait till Saturday....Speedtv is airing the whole race (Sebring) Oh and don't forget F1 starts this weekend as well on NBCSports!

Going to be at Barber for the Indy Car weekend next month. Love the track. Remember that the announcement was for 2014 only. They are still working on he long term class make up. P1 by the way had been dead in the US for years. Personally I'm interested how the mix will work.

P1 has been racing in the American LeMans Series since 1999!
It was started by Don Panoz....he made the only front engine Panoz P1!
They have to bring that car back...it was badassed!

And he's the guy behind the DeltaWing campaign!

Audi wins again....not surprised!! With the technoligy they have!

This E-tron R-18 has regenerating brakes that powers an electric motor for front drive, and a turbo diesel drives the rear wheels!

The led's....just the best of the best!

It's been dead competitively since Audi left. I've been watching ALMS since the first race so I know it's been around. There's a reason why the Panoz isn't around. Front engined prototypes aren't competitive and visibility is shit.

Audi (factory) has been racing their prototypes since '99....they have never left! They just don't race all the races state side...other than the most imoportant, Sebring...which they just won this past weekend with the E-tron! The other being the Petit LeMans in Georgia.....which fall into the championship for World Endurance Championship, (WEC)so they are racing in other countries when they are not state side!
Other than some Audi prototypes that were sold to customer teams, the factory teams don't come to Watkins Glen or Lime Rock and other tracks....unfortunatly!

Panoz P1 was very competitive actually, they just did not have the money to keep up with the factory teams!

Audi however, have not announced if they will be in with the new merger for '14!

Although there have been P1 entrants the past several years there's been low full-season car count and the full time ALMS teams get spanked by the factory/psuedo-factory teams whenever they show up. Audi likely not coming back especially with no class to land in for the R18. We probably won't get to see the Toyota or Porsche LMP1 cars either which is a bummer

Not yet. Since they still have the LMP 2 cars albeit dumbed down to DP specs they will still be very competitive. Why hold be fun will be seeing how the two different GT specs work out since the LMGT is going to be the same as the current specs. I'm still hopeful that this goes well. If not DTM is coming to the US in 2015 or 16 I think.

Well the first race of the merger is over and it was a worst-case scenario in my opinion. Daytona Prototype cars dominated, having considerably more speed than the (old) P2 cars. I know the P2 cars are down on power compared to the DP cars but considerable changes will need to be made if this class is to remain competitive. Lastly was the phantom caution thrown with the race winding down. A GT car hit a tire barrier, bounced off and kept moving under its own power while not dragging any debris onto the track. A full course caution was thrown. Same manufactured drama that is destroying nearly all types of racing it seems. I'm hopeful the IndyCar season can provide some excitement

I was at this race on Saturday....Id have to say it was exciting to watch in person. Came home on Sunday and watched it on TV and the cars actually looked like they were going slow.

Daytona is an odd case. That race has it's own set of rules that the rest of the season won't. The DPs have more straight line speed than the P2 cars. But they don't do as well in corners as the P2s. Sebring will be a better show of how they need to adjust the BOP. I watched most of the race but missed the finish so missed the controversy. As me my thought halfway through the season. I'm going to Sebring in March. And am hoping the race will be good.
