Alpine White Paint

Removing, stripping and painting hinges on NAS 97.

Used paintscratch aerosol can.

They have LRC 456. My hood says RTC6870.

Color is not close. My search seems to say both these color codes are the same. Anyone else had issues.

I bought a new Puma hood painted white.
It is a more "refrigerator" white than the rest of the vehicle.
This indicates that there were 2 shades of white.
It would be good to know which is which and what the paint codes are.

I would bring a piece of the truck to the paint supply and have it scanned. I knew my truck was originally Alpine White but since it was repainted, how do I really know it was still Alpine White? You can from there compare Alpine Whites data vs the scanned data. I ended up with aerosol that was nearly dead on.

Where do you go to get this done?

Just an auto body shop?

Yea, there is a chain of body supply places called Albert Kemperle, not sure if they are nation wide. I imagine other body shop supply places will have this type of machine too.

I ended up sending a piece of my 1976 Series III to paintscratch to be color matched when the bronze green they sent me was way to light. They matched it perfectly and sent the part back. Not the fastest way, but it was easy and reasonable.

Alpine and Savarin are the same color. Rover often has multiple names for the same color on different models- British marketing ploy

A few things worth considering:

Paint oxidizes and changes color over time -- especially single-stage colors like Alpine white. Unless the truck regularly sees compound, it's likely that it has picked up a hint of red or yellow. If you're scanning or matching the paint by eye, be sure to buff the area being compared so that you don't match to the wrong color.

The same paint code, mixed to the exact same specifications, can look notably different across different brands of paint. PPG has been my go-to but everyone has their preferences. In my experience, there's always a slight change needed to get from the paint code you mix to the actual paint on the truck.

You don't necessarily have to find someone with a scanner to match the color, but it does take a lot of guess work out of the process. If that isn't a service available in your area, a competent painter can match it by eye.
