All black 110 in Los Angeles?

Saw one this morning on the 5 heading south. Anyone know about it. Read a few years ago about Ralph Lauren owning one and I think Michael Jordan? I am sure there are few more out there. Just curious.

I've seen it too. I was up close with one in Pasadena (there may be a couple around town) -- lousy, cheap paint job. But still looked good from a distance!

Good from afar but far from good. Probably the same.

Hi Kevin

Plan is to be there. I'll have to walk the trail a bit to know if Chammy can make it. But if you can I can!!!! Maybe I'll just let you go first. Damn, you've got to be 13 feet LOA! Wicks and Jason are also planning to take the test.

It'll be fun! See you on the 22nd.

I would guess that it is "Darth Vader" owned by Jim Newmann from The Rover Group. Jim is reporedly converting the 110 to a TD5 for his clever and cute wife. They run a great shop and are terrific people.

I think that Jim purchased the truck from someone in Colorado. I am a huge fan of the all black look given that both my D-90 and LWB are black on black.

I've seen it too, it's not Jim's. Jim's has rover group stickers on it.

There's a few pics of me driving the black 110 through death valley in the Land Rover World issue before last.
It was less stickered up back then.

That truck was originally purchased from hornburg and painted black for diane keaton.

it's been around the block a few times, but now it's here and, yes, it's getting a Td5.

Question

Jack,

Doh! I almost got that one (336/500) 18 or so months ago, but the bidding got out of my range. I think of that truck from time to time and wonder what came of it and whether it was the "one that got away". Out of curiosity, is the conversion a "need to have", or a nice to have? My 110 has been around the block several times, and I hope to get several more trips prior to a powertrain transplant.

Thanks for the update and clarification. I was trying to think of the possible black D-110s that would be on I-5.

Cheers.

I wouldn't call that conversion "needless", since on the other side of all the hassle there's a Tdi, but that 110 had been completely rebuilt by a master tech in colorado, including a new wiring harness. It was the best running NAS 110 i've ever been and the R380 in it was perfect. The whole car is in tip top shape for sure.

I read somewhere that LR actually made at least one a all black 110 special order in 1993. It was for someone famous. I think It might have been for Raulph Lauren...I then saw it on ebay a while back too.

I could be wrong about the paint job though. It might have been painted by the dealer when new.

Ralph L had at least 1 painted hunter green, I think he may have had 2 but one definatly was let go. I see it pop up on eBay once in a while.

I've seen a black 110 that has appeared on ebay a couple times - it was allegedly owned by diane keaton.

Lauren was photo'd on the cover of Town and Country about a year ago, standing close to the driver's side of a beige NAS 110.

Spotted one of the above mentioned black 110s over the weekend near Brentwood (Los Angeles). Number 315/500. Super dark window tinting and mediocre paint. I couldn't get up close, so maybe it was just dirt. Wouldnt complain if it were parked in the garage next to the 90

There was one painted black from new.Not sure if it was for someone special or for a special event.
This is documented in "The Retrospective" published by LRNA in 1998, and distributed to dealers. I still have my copy. I am sure several others have been color changed over the years, ie, Diane Keaton's.

Pete and John at Huntington Service Center has worked them both. I've seen them around from time to time at their shop on Huntington. Huntington Service Center 840 Huntington Drive, San Marino CA 91108

I've seen this truck in person. It was horrible. $500. Maaco style paint job and the worst diesel conversion I've ever seen done bar none.
