absolutely incredible, AOL subscriber numbers

80% Of AOL's Revenue Is Subscribers, 75% Of Whom Don't Need It

Add my grandmother to that list. She refuses to cancel AOL even though she's had DSL for 5 years.

How a company like AOL can still have revenue (other than web marketing and owning things like engadget, etc) absolutely baffles me.

A decade or so ago when I tried to cancel my account they made it almost impossible. You had to speak with some beligerant person who didn't want to hear no. I was moving and changing banks so I ended up turning them off that way. Punks

Oh yeah - revenue based on people not getting around to whacking their old accounts. I worked there for years and it totally baffles me, too. They even offer free e-mail when you cancel.

Guess we all have low-end services that we still pay for every month.

My in-laws still use it because they're in northern/rural Wisconsin and can't get high-speed. But that niche is starting to dwindle, as satellite/long-range wifi is getting more popular/cheaper.

On a related note, don't try to cancel Tivo - you'll get beaten with the same stick. Just tried to cancel a DVR that died and I didn't replace. They just didn't understand that I have two tvs and only need two DVRs; actually tried to convince me to hook up two DVRs to one TV.
