97 sw #553

Anyone know who the original owner of 97 SW #553 was? I drove it today in central VA and 2nd owner is putting it up for sale. He bought it from someone in NoVA in 2011. Owner doesn't know guys name he bought it from. Looking for some history. Thanks!

I would love to buy a SW, but seeing as we are making offers on a new home, I won't be buying any new toys right now. I just met the owner of this SW yesterday while out at his property doing other business. I am going to try and help him get some history on it so he can sell it.

Service history is a great place to look for the PO's name.

This probably won't help much, but if that is the truck I am thinking of, the owner lived in downtown Falls Church..

Yes he did say he bought it in Falls Church. I didn't get the VIN #, but will do that. Needs some TLC for sure. Paint has fading, interior needs some work. No frame rust, he says rear cross member was replaced although it doesn't look that way. Rear door is rusted out and I could smell a strong odor of coolant while driving it. Also odometer was not working, had a t and some digits. Seller thinks there is 110K on it. When I get more info I will pass it along. He didn't have a realistic price yet, his dad kept saying $50K (this leads me to think he paid in the 40's for it but he didn't disclose what he paid). If I were a buyer, I wouldn't pay more than $30K, but that's me.

It did need some work based on the 4-5 times I saw it, and the only reason I say that is because it appeared to need the same stuff my '97 SW did, i.e. rusted crossmember and cage/basket, faded paint, same as the stuff you said above.. Agree with your price assessment as it's a 25-30k car.

If it was a 97 Arles SW I'd be finding a way to buy it, that's the only other Defender I want.

Does anyone know the previous history on this 97 SW # 553? All I know is it came from the Falls Church area, and the guy that owns it now doesn't have service records. Any info on this one appreciated, figured it belonged to a board member at some point...
