97 Defender 90 Questions

I've been a lurker here for a while. Almost bought a Defender in December but the number wasn't right. You guys were a huge help, with some great info all around. I can't say enough how awesome this forum has been.

Anyway, Keith has a black Defender up in MA:

http://www.copleymotorcars.com/?show...-90-soft-top-2

saldv224xva112782

It says "RSV Defender" on the side. It has an upgraded engine. The top looks ill-fitting, interior is average. I saw a post from earlier from rijosho about it being Rover Special Vehicles, and I searched around a bit but I didn't really find any info about what that means. Also looks like it was owned by a guy in New London, CT, so I may swing up there to buy some wings and ask him some questions if he's around.

If you guys have any info on this one, history, advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Rover Special Vehicles is the name of a shop in RI - I assume they did the engine swap in that one and the cosmetic "upgrades"

Maybe it doesn't show in these pictures as well, but there are huge gaps on the vertical section between the windows and the top on the driver side, passenger side, and on the horizontal section of the rear window. Big enough to stick your hand through. Maybe it's just the way the top was put on, but I've been looking at a few of these and haven't seen one like that before.

Here is a better look at the two sides. Is that a simple fix? Maybe the top just not on right? Or is that the way it is? It's a sizable gap from my limited experience. Still an awesome truck, just the top isn't right from what I can tell.

That's a better-than-average interior/dash for a '97. Especially for an ST. Many that I've seen look like hell, the worst offender being the auto console. Good news is that many of the problems (aside from a new/like-new dash) are easily resolved.

And note that even if it had a weather-beaten console, you can do some light sanding on tough spots and then a 5-min spraypaint stain. Better than new.

No they don't do 'upgrades' at richard's shop. They do put a sticker on cars they have serviced.

I think the rock rails say "RSV Rover 4.6". You don't think they did the engine upgrade? I assumed they did, but maybe I shouldn't.

I don't know what RSV stands for, they might've done this job, but I've never seen a car come from Richards shop with similar badging. Also Rover Special vehicles outfits defenders for government and military contracts, this doesn't look like their doing.

That said they may have installed the engine and then the owner went and did the cosmetic upgrades themselves.

on 1997's there is a vertical bar that slides into a pocket that helps the top fit better. It looks like the part is not installed.

So Keith said that they (Rich) did the engine upgrade. I guess the question is, is whether that's a good thing? Is that a reputable shop? I'm a complete noob so I have no idea who is what.

The top doesn't fit, so I think it needs a new top.

they sure do.
No shit, they do upgrade defenders but they don't 'upgrade' defenders in the sense that they slap on an aftermarket grill and plaster their name all over things.

That is the first time I have ever seen 'RSV 4.6' rock sliders, and I live across the bay and see 15 Rover Special Vehicles stickers daily; on everything from DI, DII, RRC to D90/110s.

No one is an expert on the man's shop but Mr. Moody himself. I was merely commenting that the Grill and 'RSV 4.6' are not usual 'upgrades' I see on vehicles serviced across the harbor...

RSV does top notch work, the shop is a staple of New England Land Rover repair and service.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy anything out of that shop.

they are not rock sliders. it is just a sticker on the sills. no need to get defensive or start a pissing contest jason.

shawn - the top is "fine" the only way they get "better" is if you order a canvas top and or add a gutter kit. so this is the "norm" when you look at defenders with a "best top" on it. sadly "get used to seeing it".

Is this the same one?

http://www.copleymotorcars.com/?show...pecial-edition

The original one posted does look like a good one if you can handle the price - swap out the grill and bumper for factory ones, remove the sticker and you've got a nice 90 with a stronger engine.

You know after I posted I looked again and saw they were stickers on the sills. I said to myself, 'I bet Keith calls me out that they aren't sliders'...

I am not defensive, and this isn't a pissing contest, I was commenting on the items I felt are not characteristic of RSV and that the previous owner may have done some of the cosmetic upgrades to the vehicle.

"i love how everyone on "richs shop" is an expert but have no idea what RSV stands for."
I never claimed to be an expert on Richard's Shop and I have personally only met him a handful of times. so who is pissing now?
