9/11

Just like all of you, I remember where I was on this day 13 years ago. Never forget the victims of this attack. My gratitude and respect to all first responders, FD, PD, et. all., specially to those who made the ultimate sacrifice trying to help. To the military: I salute you!

I believe everybody remembers where they were that day.

Seat 14E middle seat exit row on a Continental Airlines flight from Austin to Houston. I was starting my journey to Malaysia for an International Harley-Davidson Rally in Kualar Lumpar.

Sure I remember where I was, but I prefer to remember a coworker.

God Bless you Susan L. Blair, just the brightest light in any room. Only just learned that your fiancee died suddenly 11 years and two days after you did. A broken heart cannot always be healed.

Watch you 6. Your 3,9 and 12 for that matter. I feel like I know that place already after having read Nelson DeMille's "The Panther." Obviously, steer clear of the khat munchers!

It's a special place in the world that's for sure, it's truly a shame that the country is essentially in a death spiral running out of water & oil in some type of apocalyptic race-the terrain is stunning and it would be amazing to go there to wheel and explore.

The khat is so pervasive it's actually just hilarious, the ride to the airport was entertaining enough (thank god for up armored vehicles, not because of the kinetic threat but the traffic!) but getting checked through security by a dude that has a giant cheek full of it, likewise getting up to the ticket counter where the guy is clearly deep into the afternoon buzz.

Life is all about being the only white dude in the departure terminal of Sana'a International!

edit: added in some more pics, the Det coin's 'In chaos, we thrive' motto is priceless. Sadly the pics aren't good enough to see the AQ flag spray painted on a couple of the buildings facing the post-the hard habit of not lingering on open rooftops is not something I'm trying to break.

Was a tense week. I'm not really in a position to comment on the decisions made as post departed given my role (or rather given my job I'm not going to comment) but a useful thing to keep in mind for those taking in things from the media back in the US is a comment I made after I heard some of the incorrect things being reported early on:
Never have so many who knew so little said so much from so far away. Of course that has been true for most of my career I have found.

Credit goes to those on the ground who managed a no-win situation as best as possible under exceptionally stressful and dangerous conditions. What matters the most to me is all my Marines are back safe in the US as of yesterday midday.

Yemen was never going to get better, it's just a matter of how bad it will get and how much of it we want to be our problem.

Oh, I'm not quite home-my Marines in Yemen are out but right now I'm 'home' in Abu Dhabi after spending much of the week in northern Iraq (aka Kurdistan, which is nothing like the Iraq I spent much of 05-09 in and out of). So now I'm just worried about my Marines in Lebanon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and then sprinkled throughout the 'calmer' parts of the region-but they are doing what Marines do so it's all good!

I hear ya! It's hard to believe that the WH and State actually think we'll believe what they're saying! It's sad and funny all at the same time. Psaki couldn't run a PTA meeting and poor Adm. Kirby looks like he's choking every time he has to spew the talking points. Don't let anyone tell your boys to destroy their weapons! What B.S.! Good luck, get 'r done, and God speed!

True indeed. Thankfully I'm on the country next door (Oman) which is quite a bit nicer.

Be safe Ray. From someone who has been in the military the past 14 years (I left college and joined 2 Oct 2001) and spent 5 of them in the Middle East and Africa all I can say is take care of you and yours.
