47 MPG in a D90

Land Rover Owner International's July edition page 4 there is an article about a 200 tdi (chosen because they get better milage than 300's). The article starts out with the truck getting 14.72 mpg (12.2 mpg US gallons) and details the changes they make to improve milage.

Even after you convert Imperial to US gallons thats still 39.17 mpg out of a 15 yr old diesel.

Are you thinking about stripping off the roof and plastic wrapping your truck to get better mileage?

Nope- I'll leave that route to Charles with Janey. I tought it was interesting that each 100kg in weight costs you 1.5 mpg.

Oh yeah- welcome back stateside !

Thanks - I'm glad to be here!

Incidentally, I got 26mpg out of a tank this week...

Doug - So other than reducing weight, is there any major thing they did that produced a significant improvement? Or was it a million little things? I'll have to try to track down that issue somewhere.

Ryan- its still on the self @ my local Borders. They actually put stock size all terains on and pumped them up as hard as specs allowed, pulled the hardtop, doors, and windsheild frame in order to get weight and aerodynamics to a min and that how they got that milage. With our heavy 110 5 doors on 33 inch Km2's, lifts, winch bumpers, etc we have no chance.

Well, I guess all we can do is listen to Barack, and pump up our tires

The 2.8's (in stock tune) don't seem to do as well as the 200/300 Tdi's for fuel mileage. I'd like to get it to be consistently in the 20's, but now only see that on highway driving. I'm hoping some IP tweaking will net me improved driveability and better mileage.

Ryan, Pendy told me we should be consistently getting low to mid 20's after tweaking.

Weight costs fuel... unfortunately there ain't really a whole lot you can strip off a d-90 to save weight. Better off building a plexiglass nose cone or something.

What lift, oil, tires are you guys running? I get 18 on a good day with road tires. I averaged 16 on the highway with LTB's.

I have no lift and running a K&N with Mobile 1 10W-30 synthetic.

It seems people either get 10-13mpg or 15-19mpg. Wonder what the difference is? Manual vs Auto?

I'd be happy with that. I should be back on the road next week so I'll start tweaking then.

Well, I don't know how much weight savings it would be and what your fuel savings would be but I have a buddy who makes carbon fiber driveshafts for dragsters, race cars, and motorcycles. He recently had one shipped back that "failed" from a dragster. It was not a problem with the carbon fiber or where it was mated it was the stock metal parts that got bent up, due to the torque. Anyone know what a driveshaft weighs?
