345 HP or NOT!

OK I am looking at buying a 345 twin turbo chevy 350 with an adaptor plate to mount to an R-380, should I go for it or am I just asking for trouble?

This might sound entertaining, but it will prove a lot more expensive then the front end cost. Besides, Rovers with chevys look redneck. Flame away on me for that comment.

Smoke them tires? Do you mean smoke them R-380 and the rest of you drive train?

Follow-up Post:

I voted for the second one. Although I would like to see that set up in your D90. Just picture how fast you can go through mud holes, you might even not notice the mud hole with all that power.

Are you serious? Think about mud going through those turbos! VROOOOOOOMMM!

On second thought, it might be better for your particular driving style to also do a 12" lift and put this tire on with that engine. Then you can enter mud racing!

Mike,
I'm pretty sure if you look in the D-90 Source bylaws that you will be banned or at least flogged for swapping in a GM motor. I do think there is a special one time exemption though if it is a diesel.

Yeah and I think I should ban anyone who thinks it's a bad idea!

Not that I think 345hp is a bad idea.... But if you want to drop a common-block into the truck, it just doesn't fit the mystique of a Defender. Besides the fact that you can get just a smurf hair under 5 liters out of your block alreay, if you wanted to.

I also have to ask.... how does a twin-turbo small-block ONLY get 345hp? You can easily get that kind of power naturally aspirated, straight from chevy, brandy dandy new and make your life a LOT easier on the install without having to squeeze the pair o' spinners under there too.

If you look at the history you'll find that the early C4's small block didn't have much HP (205), so adding the TT's with that HP sounds about right.

How about putting Ford lighting engine is a Defender, would you still be considered a redneck? I mean LR is a Ford after all right?

You guys are no fun, how more Roverly ccould I get that kinda HP? And how much would I have to spend? Doesn't it count for something that I would have 2 Rover engins sitting in the driveway.

Forgot to ask, does your budget include the deep red metallic paint job and chrome plating for the cage?

Mike, supposedly the ECR guys can get you engines that get over 300 HP. I bet one of these engines would do for you, if you can import them. I bet they're cheap, too

Well my budget is elcheapo, and this one is in my range as and I would be able to sell off the lockers to make up some money to repair everything that I break on the test drive . Sure the 5.0 is pretty fast, I bet it makes 280 to 300 hp, but there is no substitute for displacement! Unless you have a supercharged 5.0, hmmm

http://www.defendersource.com/forum/...achmentid=2151 Why not put them in the living room?

Honestly, I think I would put a 345hp engine in there, but be ready to upgrade everything in the drivetrain. But I mean, why not, you're never gonna sell it are you? And isn't it kinda Defenderesque to have something no one else has? Oh, and to make it so over the top you never have to question if it'll get you there or not?

Hippert's smiling so much right now, not just because he'll have a truck that'll snap axles all the time, but because someone actually searched to find an old topic .

HEll, BCB Offroad puts those into series trucks. Why not? Be nice to have an entire aftermarket of good affordable parts at your disposal.

LOL Yes! And I think that everyone who is against me is jealous that they can't do the same! Let's look at it this way, The 3.9 is just a Buick 215 right? Well Buick is owned by GM right? I'll just be putting in another GM engine, it's a Callaway, and in 99 I think Range Rovers had a Callaway 4.6. So all in all I am sorta kinda staying Rover.

Mike, this is the best idea I have heard from you yet, but at that point put in an entire one ton drivetrain...you can get a much better tranny (auto/manual), a real transfer case (not a stupid LT230), Dana 60s front and rear or even ford 9"ers front and rear. And by selling of your rover junk your pocket won't hurt that much...I'd be happy to lend a hand if you need it.

Welcome to the dark side...

Now thats funny but def. true.....

Go ahead and put the TT on there...If it starts to be a problem you can always take those motors that you have in the driveway and put them back in....
