Pretty sure the Frenchmen in the Rangie Classic have already scratched as have the Poles in the Defender. There are a bunch of Bowlers still in though. Robbie Gordon in the big a$$ Hummer and the two leading Volkswagons have also scratched.

Anyone think it is odd that it is not even on the same continent as "Dakar"

Your right, but if they call it something else at this point I think it will not be recognized.

I believe it will be a different continent every year into the future, they have had enough with the corruption in Africa..... imagine a future Dakar rally from lets say... Arizona to Alaska! You would have all the elements from desert to rain forest to snow and ice, they never ran into snow and ice in northwest Africa.

Now that would be a race!

hi chaps robbie in the hummer is still going ...nice truck..! here in the UK we are stuck with eurosport that spend more time with the talking heads than on the action..GRRRRRR..!!

the reason it was moved is due to "unrest" and specific threats against competitors basically it was open season for a crew with a 500K truck & AQ looking for heads.

just too big a risk

I am amazed at the dune fields, i traveled through morrocco, mauri & senegal in 07 and morroco in 08, want to go to argentina now ...wonder if they will hold the falklands against me..!

Question

Gren,

You're right, looks like Gordon is still in. Wonder how the rules work that you can scratch in the 5th hour and re-enter ?

309GORDON (USA)
GRIDER (USA) HUMMER05:58:2400:02:16 is what shows on the scratched list
but here is what shows on the current placing list-5th place

5309GORDON (USA)
GRIDER (USA) HUMMER35:00:2401:34:17

Doug you can elect to not start the next stage when you are in the bivouac or service and still turn up to race if you have fixed your truck in time to start, or if you start late you get time penalties. However if you are picked up by the sweeper truck or miss more than 4 check points or DNF yoursef in the field you are out and gone.

I think Robbie rolled and got to service and said he was out but they managed to fix it for the next start.

awsome sounding truck.... for a log burner.

Regards

Gren

If Robbie was smart and really wanted to win he'd ditch the Hummer. Look at how well Miller is doing in the VW. I really don't think that a Trophy Truck like the Hummer will ever win Dakar. Maybe if they turn the race into a multiday Baja style race. Personally I think it would be fun to race one of the big trucks.

judging from the coverage we get in the uk he is on every day, as the vehicle is eye candy to those of us that always get VW and Mitsub jammed down our throats.

his profile is very high because of the truck, the guys in work are talking about him now but didnt know him from adam before the dakar.
the same goes for me and i keep one eye on the baja etc as i have an interest in the hardware

but i know him now... sponsorship will roll in.

Wasn't Gordon's first Dakar in a VW?? Can't quite recall, but I think he started in a VW and crashed out with a bad roll a few years ago.
The following year he came back with the Hummer and has been with Hummer ever since.

I'm no Hummer fan, but you have to admit that thing does pretty well considering it is 2 wheel drive.

My opinion is that Gordon doesn't listen to his co-driver very well. He puts the thing off the road a lot at hard corners. That or his co-driver doesn't have good pace notes, or he can't keep up with the speed. Who knows.

I saw his car at the SEMA show in Atlanta last year and let me tell you there is nothing Hummer in it other than a sticker with the name. They just squared the body panels off and walla it's a Hummer.

Gordon's first Dakar with VW:

Hummer...
Its as much a Hummer as a NASCAR car is a Chevy, or a Trophy Truck is a Ford.

I don't think anyone was really comparing it to anything off a showroom floor, or if they are they should be smacked.

Doesn't that make the debate about 2wd vs 4wd instead of VW vs Hummer?

The names are just ways to identify the cars.
When was the last time you saw a VW that looked like that on the street?

My point was that the 2WD Hummer (or race vehicle X if you like) was doing quite well compared to the other 4x4 VWs and Mitsus (or race vehicles Y and Z if you like).
