2004 Defender in USA - legal?

Greetings all,

I am considering buying a Defender 110 that is a 2004 from a dealership in Oregon. I have NO idea how it was legally brought into the USA, but its from a dealer so its OK right? They claim it has a clear title. It is a TD5 and looks great. They say it was previously in TX. The VIN is a 2004 UK truck.
Thoughts from the group?

Run far, run fast. Plenty of other trucks out there rather than deal with that nonsense.

It's titled and registered in a state, while import laws are federal. Some states don't inspect import paperwork or DOT/EPA regulations.

You could buy this truck "fair and square," according to your state, then have CBP impound it the next day because it was imported illegally. Or 10 years from now, you just don't know.

There is a microscopic chance that it was imported by a registered importer and made to conform with DOT/EPA regs ... but I really doubt that because I have the feeling that the guys on this forum would be the first to know about a shop set up to do that.

Yeah, I'd avoid it like the plague.

Not worth being part of a roundup

ya and it's offered by a Benz dealer in Bend, i'd just call them. Looks like it originated from http://www.neneoverland.co.uk/. I've see a few newer Defenders for sale from a Texas dealer and in the small print they point out that the truck cannot be registered in the state (possible titled though) but would make a nice addition to a ranch or a large private land owner.

So I called them ad they said they stand by the car, and that it would get a title no problem. I am skeptical though. I am going to call back tomorrow and talked to the manager. I guess I am getting my hopes up...it seemed to good to be true. I just dont have 75K to gamble on a car....but I want it!

AHHHHH!

Title is not the issue. Those are assigned by the state. Real issue is the Fed. They won't care if its titled, registered, insured, inspected, etc. They will just take the truck and you will be left with a title.

OK this is a simple math problem that can be solved by anyone almost as smart as a 5th grader.
Part 1: 2017 (current year) - 25 (legal imports MUST be 25 years old) = 1992.

Second part of the are you smarter than a 5th grader analysis.
Is the titled year of the vehicle less than or equal to 1992 in order to legally meet the current CBT interpretation of Federal Import Law?
Yes or no?
Take the test... call a friend, whatever.

Or

Break the deal (Federal Law) and spin the wheel... when you purchase any vehicle < 25 years old.

Vin shows up as a lien sale for Pdx British back in 2015. To me that suggest someone didn't pay their bill and it was repossessed. http://publicnotices.djcoregon.com/s...etail=10583293

My guess is 1. you'll only be able to get a title/reg for a farm or ranch vehicle. 2. US Customs will be knocking on your door one day with a court order to seize it. You'll be able to keep your weed though. Be interested to find what they say..but i think you found your answer here in the thread..

What's wild is if this Benz dealer franchise took this on trade, having no idea it was illegal in US. OR they are brokering it for a buddy that knows (or doesn't know, which is unlikely) it's illegal but is using the dealer to facilitate the sale. I am betting that dealer has zero idea here. Why risk this business and your dealership reputation?

And the "window sticker", as well as the ad listing says "automatic" . It's got heat score written all over it.

That truck is indeed a Td5. Being it's from Nene, quite possibly has a new chassis (possibly galv) with no Vin on it.

Google is your friend- this took 2 mins. Belonged to this guy Global-Detour

Likely entered the US on a travel carnet and broke down in Oregon, ie never left as it was supposed to
Looks like the guy just abandoned it.
