2002 D90 on eBay

I saw this listing on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=31849 and decided to run a carfax report on it. It comes up as a DII registered in RI with over 90K miles on it. What's the story????

Is this a similar situation like the guy on RN BBS selling a 93 110 with a Series VIN #?

Just curious...

Yup, a couple people have been doing this. I was contacted the other day by a guy who would import either a 110 or 130 of my choice, LHD and get it a "new" VIN from another Rover product. Seems to be a growing trend.

I would love to see what happens when you get that insured. I know in MA, they need to take pics of the vehicle and stuff. My insurer(s) would balk at it being a two door DII.

In NY they only take pics if you get full collision. They took pics of my Jeep but when it came time to insure the trail rig 4Runner I just went for bare bones so that they wouldnt drop me when they saw my "stock" truck. Be interesting to see what they'd do when they found out about this vin swapping.

The story is that swapping VIN plates is illegal! Who ever owns or is attempting to sell this D90 is a moron for two reasons:

1. It won't take long for an Insurance Company to figure out whats going on. Especially when they see it.

2. He/She strapped thier childs carseat to one of the jumpseats in the back.

Have you seen the reason he has it listed as a D2? Apperently E-Bay filters recognized that importing a 2002 was illegal so he listed the D2's!

I love the special forces story! HAsn't he seen that army of one comercial where the 110 rolls out of a chinook?

Did you guys read the questions and answers? He says he has 45 new TD5s! He is only about 2 hours drive from me now I want to drive down and see them.

Questions from other buyers for this listing
Q: Thanks for your lack of response. I'm a Law enforcement officer in Houston and when I contacted U.S. Customs, they questioned your possesion of this vehicle due to import laws. I now see why I did not rec'd a response. Answered on Oct-13-04
A: I have responded to over 50 emails in the past few days I am sorry you did not receive one go ahead and contact how you like you have no Idea who and what we are this car was imported buy us being Land Rover Special vehicles for the US gov it is sitting on our lot with over 45 new TD5 Defenders I am sure customs will love to here from you and funny you would be in Houston we have an office in Seabrook very small world if you have a legit question send it to us we will be more than happy to respond and what enforcement office would that be that you are associated with I am curious so please do not make idol threats
Q: Hi, what is the regestered VIN for the truck? Is it regestered/titled as a 2002? Could you fax me the actual 17 digit VIN? 603-559-9901 Thanks, RJ endlessearth4wd Answered on Oct-13-04
A: The truck is registered as a 2002 Defender SW 3 DOOR Diesel 5 cyl the actual vin on the truck is SALLDVB582A634634 This number would not go into the ebay system
Q: Any interest in trades of any type? Thanks. Answered on Oct-12-04
A: No
Q: Dear Seller, Please reply to JWMurray6@yahoo.com. I am a serious potential buyer for your Land Rover Defender 90. Do you have an asking price for the Defender? Is this vehicle exempt for the typical US laws regarding defenders? Thanks, Jim Murray JWMurray6@yahoo.com Answered on Oct-12-04
A: good luck bidding

I've heard of this guy, a couple from Florida recently visited me here in RI. They stopped off in Jamestown to chat with this guy. They left me his business car b/c he had a nice series III for sale. If I remember correctly, they said he claims to do all the importing of Land Rovers for use in the US government, he does vehicle prep for them or something. I doubt the goverment would be pleased to see he's titleing some of those TD5s as Disco's and selling them.

Mike, come on down and we'll take a ride over there and check them out. It's only about 45 mins from me. If I find the card I'll post his info if anyone wants to call and hassle him

Dave I'm a little busy the next 2 weekends, and I don't think it would be a good idea to post his info, if he is ligit we don't want to hassel him. But now that I think of it there was a guy at MAR 03 that had a new wolf, he said he imported them for the military. I don't rember where he is from but it may be the same guy.

Souza and Hippert. I'm free the weekend of the 30th. Let's take a ride down. I've heard quite a bit about the guy in Jamestown. Been wanting to make a trip to visit.

Don't forget to bring a camera! I would like to see if this "Tool" is full of it or if he's telling the truth.

Yeah, I think ebay doesnt care whether your car is legally imported or not - they just dont smile on the practice of listing a car with an alternate VIN.
