1998 = No More NAS Defenders. How Many Rumors Are There?

Misinformation. It's everywhere. I'm wondering how many ridiculous stories people have heard or read over the years as to why the Defender was no longer imported as new after 1997?

This weekend I was sitting in traffic at the Holland Tunnel entrance on my way out of NYC when I could see an Asian male in his 40s staring at me out of the corner of my eye in a Honda Civic wearing a reflective traffic vest. I looked over/down, he cranked down his window, and said, "So, how many Catalytic Converters do you have in there?" I gave him a distant look for a second while I pondered the question, and his reflective vest, "Two" I replied, wondering where this was all coming from. "Oh nice. Yours looks really nice, so you must have one of the final few that were allowed to be imported, since yours came with catalytic converters. I heard that Land Rover started refusing to include catalytic converters in the Defenders, and that was why they were no longer allowed to be imported."

I had a guy tell me that Australia wasn't exporting them anymore because of hostel relations with the US!!! I just looked at him with the most bewildered face??? Where do people get this crap, I tried to explain the whole safety issues with airbags and he didn't believe me. I just SMH and walked away!!

Well that's interesting on the converters...it's all political junk, someone just ticked someone else off and got behind a "reason" and wouldn't back down. Now no more Defenders.

Redesign entire truck. To include wiring harness with airbag system and abs for 98 model year only for US market = no thank you. Based on 2-3k trucks sold ea year here= no financial return on investment

Airbags, finances...you guys are being far too factual. This is for the RIDICULOUS stories you've heard come out of people's mouths.

I heard it's a scheme backed by the government to reduce the rights of law abiding citizens ... what will they do next?

I am sure there are people who blame Obama. It seems everything is his fault to some people.

But to be honest, everyone I talk to either doesn't know at all, or knows the truth about airbags and other safety things.

Josh- you are asking for wild ass stories after I almost single handedly rebuked all the import related BS this spring ?

Its amazing the creativity of some of these folks and the "I have it on good authority" stories that surface. Whats completely f'd is that perception is reality so many choose to believe the falshoods...

I could write a book....

Is there a real reason? Question, do the 2013s now have airbags?

I met this one guy in NYC once. First, he gave me his card without first saying hello, then he told me that Land Rover stopped importing Defenders after 1997, because he asked them to. When I told him it was because of airbags and some other stuff, he replied "My 1997 NAS D90 has airbags." Then he told me that NAS 110s are really only worth $20k. When I asked him how he came up with that number, he told me that they were only worth what he was willing to pay for one. Then he asked me if I had ever heard of defendersource. I said "yeah I'm a member." He then said, "Nice to meet you, I'm rd10014" as his chest hair billowed out from his V-neck.

Yes, they all do, but only for rear-impacts.
