$18,000 Check and a Busted Up 90

Another chapter in the life of my truck. This Halloween some kids elected to beat the shit out of my truck. By this I mean they keyed most every panel, jumped on the hood and the roof and poured something in my gas tank. Insurance company has given me a check for $18,000 to fix it. Mechanically it needs a new fuel pump, but runs perfect when it's hooked up to an outside fuel source.

So With this check i'm using it as a base to rebuild the truck. Galvanized frame, sand and soda blast out all the rust, replace all the damaged panels and fresh paint. My head is all over the place on what to do as I feel my options. Part of me wants to make it a TDI, but i know that will be a huge pain in the ass. What would you guys do in my shoes? Any suggestions? Rebuild Or just fix it and get it back on the road?

4-Oaks is going to do the mechanical stuff (love those guys) and they recommended Avio Coach Craft (great knowledgeable guys and really know the truck) so I am confident with them...Havent been down to WCR.

Man that sucks. If I had seen someone doing that to one of my trucks there's no telling what I might have done. I would get the truck mechanically right and looking good before dumping money into a TDI. If the frame isn't bad I wouldn't worry with it either. You can always put the left over money in the bank and save it for later needs too.

Wow how did you have your truck insured? 18k doesnt seem like much if it needs the body panels replaced as well as whatever may have happened to the engine.

I would most likely be in jail if I intercepted the vandals

I'd start by buying a set of SVX rims...

You live in SoCal why bother with a galvanized frame?

So you need a fuel pump, roof, hood, and a pair job?

Did you get a cost on that alone? How much is left?

------ Follow up post added November 15th, 2011 06:11 AM ------

Also where do you live in la that this happened?

I think you should source your own hood and roof as it will cost much less. Don't forget roof seals etc.

See how much is left. If you get a 2.8 new, installed you would eat the 18k up instantly.

You could also use the $18k toward a down payment on a place in a safer area...

When mine got broken into at my mechanics shop this summer, they trashed my center console and ripped up my door panels in two separate events. Combined, the insurance company gave me around $3600 based on prices of parts from Land Rover directly + labor. From that I was able to fully repair every little scrap of damage with brand new aftermarket parts, replace the radio and speakers, buy a new couch for the living room and a pinball machine I've been after for a while.

One of the few times that the extreme prices of dealership parts has worked in my favor.

Did they catch them?

If your chassis is in good shape I'd just get it galvanized rather than buying a galvanized one.

Ron might have the right idea unless you love the truck. Change fuel pump which would be cheap and sell it.

This. People will buy it for cheap especially if it runs.

Agreed, and that $33K will buy you a fresh, low mileage truck that hasn't been repainted.

When I was in a wreck it cost $3,600 just to fix a door. I'm not sure $18,000 is enough???

Hood and a roof aren't cheap but not too hard to source. If you are fixing it, and buying new, get a td5 hood. Better construction and less prone to rust.
