109 opinion

This is for sale near me and I have always wanted a 109 but know very little about the price of these things and what the pros and cons are per the years and what not. Would appreciate some input. thanks, Mike

You really can't tell from the ad, you have to go see it. The fact that he is including replacement foot boxes would lead me to suspect the bulkhead is in need of repair. Of course in CA a bulkhead in need of repair could go for years before getting much worse.
I would ask for details on the Salisbury with locking diff too, he may be mistaken that it has a locker from the factory since he does not specify what type of locker it is.

I love my 109, there is nothing like driving an old series. They come in many shapes and sizes, the domestic market is widely variable and close inspection is a must. Rust rust rust, that is the enemy. I imported mine from Slovenia about six years ago. I had been looking at NAS Exmods when the last ones were being demobed and had a friend look at them for me in the UK but they were all junk. I found my LHD that was a former slovenian forest service fire vehicle. It was all original and in good shape. I drove it until the 2.25L crapped out and am now doing a body off restore and have done a mercedes diesel conversion. Other than the diesel motor it is stock.

There are lots of places for rust to hide. When you go look at them, take a hammer and tap every concievable point in the frame for soft spots. Surface rust is the tip of the iceberg, the real rust is inside the frame.

Ive only driven one series 5 door and the 2.25L seemed horribly inadequate. It was fine in my 88s and 109 pickups but I think you will find it way underpowered when carrying all the extra weight of that 5 door body.

Seems decent, but it could be completely rusted. 109 SW are the most desirable but it is a RHD and SIII so those both hurt it. I bet it sells at 6k in a few days unless it is complete crap. Most people want 8k-12k and up for a 109 SW that runs and drives.

Thanks guys. I am going to look at it today if the owner has time. Rust is one of the few things I know to look for from having a bunch of Defenders. Sounds like the frame and footwells will tell the tale. Thanks again, Mike
