Wrenching party in Nova, Saturday April 28th

If anyone has any interest in helping or learning, I'll be working on my engine this Saturday starting around 10am. I have one person committed to helping from my local 4x4 club, but would love some help from rover guys (or gals).

First, I'll be doing some tests like a compression test and leakdown test, possibly determine if my oil pressure is good, before tearing the top end down for further inspection. Depending on what we find the end goal may even be to yank the engine, or stop with the heads and timing cover.

Does anyone have a leak down tester? It's a special set of gauges to measure the pressure loss. I'm told you can just force some compressed air in and see it bubble out the coolant reservoir if there is a leak, but using the proper gauge would be nice.

Does anyone know what readings I should expect to get?

If anyone has a mechanical oil gauge with different fittings, or knows where a good place to find one locally that will fit my rover (or know thread size etc so I can order one online before then), please let me know.

Food and drinks provided. I live in South Riding. http://lhsw.com/directions.html

I'll check and see if the warden has any plans for me this Sat... I wouldn't mind getting my hands dirty and learning some thing I don't know how to do if I'm not going to be in the way..

I think your mapquest link may be off (unless you live very near where I went to college).

Well, the warden says she has things to do on Sat and that I'm on kid and cleaning duty since we have company coming over for dinner... So looks like I'll be stuck at home... yipee..

Streak of luck on my part... The inlaws called complaining that they haven't seen the kids in a while.. So I'll clean house tomorrow and the warden said she'd drop the kids off at the inlaws on Sat while out doing her thing..

I'm back in... Although, if you don't mind, I may have to crawl under my truck and replace some tie rod ends.

Tony, I'll take what I can get . Your right about the link - that page was made many moons ago but would never have expected it to break. I changed it to my map engine of choice and verified it's accurate now, thanks.

Eric, thats no problem at all - would be great to have you either way.

Greg, I'd be going to big dogs if my shit wasn't broke.

Robbie, good to hear. I might need your engine hoist and/or stand soon - will yell as soon as I figure out if I'm going to try a top end rebuild on mine, or yank it.

I have a leakdown tester (arrived today!), and a compression tester, and although my tools are not the best I think I have everything needed.

The oil pressure issue worries me though. I'll see if I can pull the sendor and check a local parts store for a guage before tomorrow. But if you have any ideas on that, please let me know.

thanks

Once he got air into the cylinder it sounded like it was leaking out the valves..

Yeah, no indication whatsoever of it leaking out the head gasket or block and all held the pressure well. The rear two cylinders (7 & 8) might have had more loss than the others.

The only place you could hear air coming out was the top of the heads, but I am not sure if that was out of the valves or down past the rings and back up through the center of the engine ( we had the valve covers off).

Thanks for coming and lending a hand guys.

charles

Greg, say it isn't so. I just read a big dogs trail report and it sounds like you took some body damage (vehicle description matched your rig).

Yeah, that was me. Nothing serious, but definitely adds some character. I just caught the rear driver's corner on a trees while descending and making a left turn. They put trees in the worst places on some of those trails! It should pop out very easily, but my girlfriend thinks the scratches are sexy!

Sorry to hear you sold the other D. My respect for you has halved. Just kidding.

Just wanted to let anyone who was interested in this thread know that the engine swap is on.
