Scary using Shayne and Gustavo in the same sentence with expert ;-), but my preference would be to skip the Civic sections, and let Gustavo and Shayne tell us about them :-0

Would have thought Jellico would be tough given their wheeling, but this is a whole different animal...

If anybody is coming through Nashville on the way to Memphis please let me know. Maybe we can meet up or I can meet y'all as you pass south.

Is the plan to camp and cook each night, or hop from hotel to hotel? The latter will cut down on camping gear and leave more room for spare parts.

Why not start out west and work your way back? I bet every aspect of the western portion is better than the eastern portion.

Correct

Dangerous and foolish would be the least

I would be more concern on fitting a Rover past MO on those single tracks

Yeah yeah yeah

Shayne is the expert at running it quite dangerously and I the expert at changing my underwear often around CO and UT

Ha ha

PS you are right Jellico is a good start to let the not so experience driver ( insert Pedro here ) get their feet wet :-)

For anyone wanting to get a look at trails, routes etc etc...on this page - https://sites.google.com/site/gpskev...-america-trail

There is a map that you can click on, navigate around and IN to the trails. Funnily enough I notice that most "trails" are actually named roads and common byways that we will share with farmers in pickups - until you get to Colorado - but I haven't reviewed every stretch of it.

So maybe to Bo's point we will be staying in hotels and eating at diners - but in all reality I expect we should plan on getting "stuck" in the middle of you know where at least a few times, so tents or in car sleeping probably.

Anyway, lots more planning to go.

From my experience I always plan for the worst and hope for the best...because hope ain't no plan.

i think it will be a mix of both.. i'd say plan on camping and then we can opt for cheap hotels (i'm sure shane will differ on this idea) as we see fit on a day/day basis.

next question is - Which maps? Sam's are the "Official" ones if there is such a thing but not sure it matters if they are largely the same.

My list is getting shorter for prep work..
figured out a jerry can solution for the roof since i scored 2 MFC's at the flea market.

just need to make an Oztent platform out of starboard and get some M/T's mounted up and finally order and install the extended range fuel tank (which i have been wanting to do for a while now anyway).

Guys, while these free maps are a gift from Kevin they contain some WRONG info, breaking federal Laws.

One part that has been reported is the pic below ( I believe is Kevin's Maps 02 and 02E1

Plus, we should indeed support Sam for being the Pioneer of this trail , just my $ 0.02 not that anyone cares

What is the purpose of the platform for the Oztent?

You're going to love the fuel tank. Its way cheaper to buy in the UK if you know anyone going over there and it is small enough to be a checked bag.

Long and the short of the platform...

My Load Bar spread is apx 19" and simply 2 bars (Made by Wolf-fab) - I wanted to give the Oz-Tent more support, apx 3' of flat surface to hopefully prevent any of the structure from bending - esp when on washboard road.

It'll be a simple affair.. a piece of 3' X18" starboard or 3/4" plywood bolted to the rack with some eye bolts to run straps through for the tent.. It will also give a little more clearance for the roof as well which is a good thing.

This is on an ST with a D90Tops Fiberglass hardtop.

related - i am also replacing my antenna with a stubby flexible one, so i won't kill it again slinging the OzTent up and down off the roof. - Oz is on the drivers side - Fuel cans on the passenger side so i can use a siphon to drain them in place.

wish i would have thought of that, i spend 1/2 of 2015 on/off in sheffield

Kicking this up to the top...

Truck prep continues..
+ 8 Gal tank on the way
tire/wheels also

Rack reinstalled and test fit the basket (small cross bar type) - so it looks like i can fit 2 jerry cans of fuel and have room for water on the rack.. plus out the Oz up there (still need to build a support for it..

we need to order maps soon, and get a roll call

More than 30 days has passed since the last post...???...

[trashtalk]
...is enthusiasm waning and this is going to shift to Lavender leading us on a few laps around the local mall in his D-130?
[/trashtalk]

I figure the trip is just about 60 days out and there are still decisions to be made like;
  • Headcount / names
  • Starting location / date / time (exact)
  • Route of travel / miles per day / points of interest
  • Length of trip (days and total miles) - ie: where are we stopping and how do I get home?
  • Camping versus hotel (or a mix)
  • Cooking meals versus local dives, diners, and drive-ins
  • .... and the all important "where do I buy my TAT sticker?"

I figure we will have a small group of interested folk at the Rovers At Wintergreen event on April 15 that could caucus a little on this subject ....

The only way you get the sticker is when you buy the maps, but more important, why would you want the sticker without having done it ? :-)
