I do love southern central america (CR + NC) but there is a lot more geography and culture to explore in the northern end. In Belize (BZ) alone there is more ancient architecture standing than modern.

I was so bummed when they retired the Scotia Prince (AKA Yucatan Express) from the route back in 06 (IIRC). And ever since, have been the biggest cheerleader for a new route and vessel, few travel opportunities would make me happier. But, after 6 years of sacrificing small land rover parts to the Maya gods of tourism, and little progress being reported, I'm getting doubtful.... More buzz about Tampa to Cuba theses days (which could also be pretty cool adventure travel).

That said, if it does come true, I will drive "Betty" back up from CR and keep in Florida for northern central america exploration via the ferry. Perhaps bring Oscar down too.

As for price, you are correct Adam, posted rate seems wicked low. But anything triple digits is still a good deal for truck and driver--IMO. I cost me near $2,000 to ship Betty to Belize in a container, clear BZ customs, and for me to fly to BZ one way. $1,500 for two people + truck round trip is not a deal breaker for me.

If this is sailing ~winter/spring '16 I will be strongly considering taking Rupert for a nice adventure to the Yucatan to get him on the boat there.

Just got an email from UCL (NOT ULC!) announcing they were granted US Government ferry license approval to begin their Cuba ferry service. In the email they stated in next few months the Cancun ferry will be launching.

Progress!

Are they gonna allow you to take vehicles on the ferry for use in Cuba?

Doesn't say on the website or email. I'm going to hazard to guess that the US and Cuba have not reached agreements on reciprocal driver license, auto insurance coverage and criminal prosecution yet. (think Obamacare role out).

Any US vehicle heading over there, if it gets in, may end up being a one way trip. A Disco may look pretty sweet parked next to a 57 chevy.

That is my understanding.

I've traveled through central america in trucks with both US and Centro American plates. With the former, in some countries, you need to buy local short term auto insurance, no doubt that is what Cuba will do as well. I envision an agent on the ferry and some guy at the Cuba side docks asking for proof as you roll off the boat.

In Nica short term was about $16US for your 90 day visa, Belize was $80+ for a month (And you needed a tariff bond which was another $120+) Mex has some odd-ball rules some areas you need to buy insurance some you don't, if in county for only a few days.

No doubt the whole ferry business plan is based on a consumer cost less than flying. The Columbia-Panama RO/RO has been killed again because of cost and days of paperwork prep.

This is all very exciting!

I am in for a bike trip via ferry to Mejico if you decide to visit again and go few boys/bikes.
I am in no condition to ride through from here nor the death wish to cross the border in 2 wheels .
I am way too old for another TAT , nor I have the time or the stamina to handle the old girl through single tracks, so the ferry sounds like a super alternative

I'm not sure I would want to subject myself to that sort of torture...
