Solaros SAE event - September 13-15, 2013

We are trying something new this year for the annual Solaros SAE event - it will be held at the Windrock/Coal Creek off road park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Coal Creek offers over 250 miles of trails on over 70,000 acres.

Coal Creek is centrally located near Knoxville, Tennessee which we hope will attract participation from all of the Southeastern Land Rover clubs. There is a wide variety of trails for all levels of off road adventures.

As we have traditionally done at previous SAE events we will have an auction to raise money for charity - all proceeds will be donated to the Towns and Union County Chapter of Habitat For Humanity.

We will be reserving an area of the primitive campground for our group. The campground also has bunkie cabins and full cabins available (reserve early) plus full hook-ups for RVs and there are plenty of available hotel rooms in nearby Oak Ridge.

We will have a catered dinner on Saturday evening just before the auction.

Information on registration and costs will be available shortly - we're still working out the details with the campground.

Please get the word out to the membership of other surrounding Land Rover clubs and invite them to join Solaros on September 13-15 for their annual Southern Appalachian Expedition.

Do you guys have any pictures from this place? The website for Windrock/Coal Creek has 4wheelers only in their gallery and on the Solaros forum I could only find some links to pics w/ FJs and they were on just some dirt/gravel roads that didn't look too impressive. The trail map looks extensive, though. Just trying to see what the trails are really like.

Is 509 miles one way too far for a weekend in a Defender?

Yes... too far. Head out to the National Rally instead. It will be in CO this year.

If Im not deployed, I do plan on going to the Rally.

I'll be in the DC area during this weekend, possibly with the Defender.

I'm planning on going....just not down Trail 44 (think that's the one)....took a Mog with front and rear hydraulic winchs three days to drag my busted-ass truck off that trail....

I think the theme for this years' SAE should be, "Don't follow Dempsey".

They have trails that make Tellico look like a walk in the park...some are absolutely wicked....

Here's a pic of an easy trail:

And on top of destroying my truck, when I got back to the campsite after day two of the recovery effort , everything was gone....a freak whirlwind had come through...only hit my camp.....tent and easy-up was uprooted and blown 100 yards away...easy-up was a mangled mess, tent was ripped to shreds....everything I had was yard-sale'd over an area of a football field.....witnesses said it looked like a mini-tornado....guess I pissed off the off-road gods that weekend....or maybe it was the Rover gods punishing me for going to Mogfest.....

The trails are well rated and maintained at that level. If they rate it medium and it gets much worse it will be repaired. But if it's rated "Most Difficult" . . . . . it's really difficult. There's over 250 miles of trail spread over 72,000 acres.

I'm the SAE chairman at SOLAROS, let me know if you have any questions. We'll post more info as it comes available.
Thanks,
Mike

had a great time last year but won't be able to make it this year -- the Balkans are a calling. Scored some good shine at the SAE and met some good folks.

Sorry to hear you won't make it this year, I enjoyed meeting you & your passenger last year.
Could be worse, you could be going to the desert.
Thanks for serving,
Mike
