SoCal: Rovering by Satellite

The Land Rover Club of San Diego is running a Land Navigation and GPS Training event in Ocotillo Wells, April 20-21:

Rating: Easy. Learn how to use your GPS devices and apply them to offroad Topo maps. We will set base camp at one of the shade ramadas and have a 30 minute to 1 hour quick crash course on reading GPS coordinates, and how to get your bearings on a map. For the more adventurous, we can cover bearing and distance, map plotting, grid to magnetic heading calculations, etc. Once everyone gets their bearings (pun intended!) with the maps we will pair trucks into teams to see if they can locate boxes hidden throughout the park, racing against other teams... there may even be prizes!

In addition, we will have you calling in your progress to the base camp as your team finds your treasure... so you get valuable practice with your Ham Radio!

We will camp for the night inside the SVRA and then gauge interest in more desert fun or heading straight home in the morning. For those not wanting to camp, we will be within 2 miles of Highway 78 so you can easily leave that night.

Come learn a valuable off-roading skill and tour Ocotillo Wells at the same time!

Spent the last few days scouting out the trails we will be using... here is a cool picture from one of the nights that we took with Josh's (crash303) D60. That's Josh's 90 and my LR3.
