Craig -

The park has a few sections of camping. ROAV reserved camping area C for the exclusive use of rally attendees. There are only a limited number of camping sites in area C. Each site is supposed to be large enough to support two tents.

In order to keep costs down, and keep the club in a single area, we are offering to double-up in sites at a lower cost. So, if you are attending with a few of your buddies and were going to camp close anyway - go for the shared campsite option.

If you want your space or are bringing a large footprint (large trailer / multiple vehicles) then you should go for the private sight.

Once campsite C is fully booked, rally attendees can reserve their own site in area A, B or in any of the larger cabins. The club has not reserved any of these sites and this will be outside of the registration fees.

This is a little complicated and is one of the things that we are trying to get sorted on the registration page - hence the delay in getting it posted.

Update on Rally

(Cross posted from ROAV web site.... www.roav.org)

On May 4th, 2013 – Bob and I visited Douthat State Park and scouted around before the upcoming rally. Our goal was to go over last minute logistics with the campground and to take a look at the scenic trail to make sure that it was still open.

Of course, the Park’s lake and dam are still there and as pleasant as ever. We saw a guy pull in a fish while in his boat – so there was at least one fish in the lake (if fishing is your thing).

If you are tired of the wheeling – and do not want to fish – then the Park has a nice beach area for swimming and relaxing.

This is a fairly typical campground site for our area. It has a long “driveway” with a picnic table, lantern post, and a small fire ring/grill. Each site also has 110v/220v -30amp power along with running water.

There will be 29 sites in our area for us to use. We are looking to double-up in sites where we can in order to fit more people in our area. The campground likes to keep each site to 2 vehicles (plus tents and related campers / trailers). If you want a space to yourself or if you are bringing a large footprint then you may need to register for a whole space.

Our camping area also has a dedicated bathroom and shower house. There were only 2 showers stalls on the men’s side but they were clean and the water was toasty. (sorry, no photos of the shower.)

If you would like to rent one of the parks cabins or do not want to camp with the group (or sign up too late and space has run out) then you can call the park directly and reserve your own spot elsewhere in the Park. There are three other camping areas plus more than 20 cabins of various sizes.

The campground is fairly well picked over in terms of firewood just lying around. The park also asks that people NOT bring firewood from around the state due to problems with insects. The solution is that the park has several firewood stands about the park asking $4 for 10 sticks of wood on an honor system.

I did not get a chance to take a photo of it, but the park has a full service restaurant on site. They serve three meals a day and offer free unsecure Wi-Fi. (Cell signal is the pits throughout the campsite) We have the restaurant reserved for a club meal on Saturday night. We will conduct our raffle / door prizes after the dinner inside the restaurant.

Here is Bob and I fording the large water crossing at the beginning of the scenic trail. The water is clean and the bottom is fairly smooth making this a light-duty water crossing. The rest of the trail was clear and open and not as technical but had some nice terrain and views. We found a spot for a good view of the sunset for a Friday evening drive.

After this weekend, Bob and I are pretty excited about the weekend. We should have registration up any day now. Let us know if you have any questions.

I am sitting in the restuarant at the Park and I can report that while most of VA is suffering rain, the rain appears to be gone this far west. It should be a nice weekend with mild temperatures and limited dust on the roads.

If anyone was on the fence about coming due to weather - do not worry and come on down.
