ROAV 2016 Rovers At Wintergreen

Hello Everyone,

Please put April 15 - 17 on your calendar for the 4th Annual Rovers at Wintergreen (RAW) event. Event details and registration information are posted on the website - roav.

Registration: Registration costs are $120 for the first vehicle ($25 for each additional vehicle per family). The base registration includes one vehicle, one Saturday night meal ticket, one raffle ticket, and one t-shirt. Please note that all attendees must be current members to attend. Membership dues ($20/year) can be paid separately via the registration web site, if needed. If you attended the 2015 MAR (or renewed any time after that) then your membership is still current.

Accommodation: Overnight accommodations are not included in the event registration. Attendees are encouraged to contact the Wintergreen Resort group reservation telephone number at 844-458-6550 to make their own reservations. This number is set up specifically for our event. $132.24 / night w/ tax

Saturday Dinner: There will be a group meal at the Wintergreen Resort on Saturday evening. A cash bar will open at 6:30pm for a happy hour with dinner scheduled for 7:30pm. One adult meal ticket is included with each registration. Extra Saturday meal tickets can be purchased online for $20/ adult or $10/ child.

Raffle and Giveaways: Immediately following dinner (~8:00pm), we will have a small raffle with several giveaways. We are currently soliciting support from a variety of sponsors.

Event T-Shirts: Event T-Shirts are available on a pre-order basis. Shirts may be purchased for $20 online. The cut off period for pre-purchasing t-shirts will be midnight on Friday, March 28. There will be a very limited supply of t-shirts available for purchase on site. It is best to register early to reserve your t-shirt.

Trial Rides: There are various trails available for RAW attendees at a mix of scenic, intermediate and advanced. All trail drives will be guided. More information about routes and times will be provided at registration. There is currently a plan for a sunset trail ride on Friday that should be over in time to enjoy dinner on your own at one of the many popular local eateries and breweries.

In 2015, we had approximately 60 vehicles and 125 people attend, and this year we are expecting the crowd to grow. Please make plans to join us.

Work Weekend Schedule:

· Feb 13, 2016
· Feb 27, 2016
· Mar 12, 2016

Work Weekends are open to all members. They normally consist of brush clearing and limb trimming. The common tools needed are limb loppers, heavy-bladed weed whackers, chainsaws, work gloves, rakes, and a positive attitude. There are usually good opportunities to get your truck tires muddy, as well.

The work weekend begins by meeting at Ashley’s Market at 9:00am:

Ashley's Market
6445 Rockfish Valley Highway
Afton, VA 22920

They have both food and gas (and last year they were selling Girl Scout Cookies).

I'll be there. Would anyone have any interest in camping at GWNF or somewhere else nearby on Thursday, then maybe doing some trails in that area on Friday before heading to Wintergreen?

FYI: for guys that have families interested in using the Resort facilities, the safest play is to stay in one of the Resort's properties or be sure the property owner you rent from is a member. For wives that want to use the Spa, book early. It's a great place but fairly low-key, not a massive high volume resort like folks have grown accustom.

So given the timing is Spring Thaw(ish), does this tend to be a mud fest?

Wasn't a mud fest last year. Trails were somewhat rocky (shale/dirt).

There are several campgrounds in the larger area:

- Sherando Lake Recreation Area (9 mile / 30 minutes)
- Shenandoah Acres Campground (17 miles / 30 minutes)
- Montebello Camping and Fishing Resort (21 miles / 40 minutes)

I will check to see if there is camping allowed on the Wintergreen property.

Can't wait. Does ROAV still have a Forum option on the site like they used to?

The ROAV gave up maintaining the forum. The traffic was too low to justify the cost and man hours to keep it running. The club Facebook page has replaced that functionality.

I will check with Wintergreen this weekend about on-site camping. We are going down for a work weekend this Saturday.

Trevor, Sherando is a State Park camp facility in the GWNF.
Facility Details - SHERANDO LAKE RECREATION AREA FAMILY CAMPING, VA - Recreation.gov

They open April 1.
I just drove this yesterday for the trail prep and from the Sherando entrance it's a 5 min drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway and 12 minutes to the Wintergreen Lodge.

I confirmed today that camping on the Wintergreen Property is not allowed. Wintergreen tries to encourage folks to fill their hotel rooms.

I saw another campground this past weekend. It is about 40 mins away from the Wintergreen Resort but it is very near a very cheap gas station ($1.47/gallon)
