Portsmouth Island, NC This Weekend

This weekend a group of us are heading over to Portsmouth island via a private vehicle ferry.

Anyone wishing to join needs to check the various websites and book passage, rent one of the beach house cabins or camp.

The island in uninhabited and a best kept secret spanning about 23 miles of oceanfront coastline that ranks tops on the east coast.

I am really busy the next few days and will be unable to answer a lot of questions, but we are taking the ferry over from close to Newburne, NC mid day Friday and coming back Sunday afternoon.

Join us for the trip if you can make it with this short notice.

If you are into surf fishing, the new moon is Friday night so should be good.

Looks like we are up to 5 teen agers so kids will have fun too.

Looks like a fun trip. I spent a long weekend there about 10 years ago, camping on the beach. It was fantastic except for the mosquitos... which were ferocious. During the day they weren't too bad... the heat and winds kept them at bay, but in the evening... geez, it was awful. I think we went in September, if I recall correctly. Anyway, for the unfamiliar, take lots of bug spray and use it liberally.

For those of you familiar with Portsmouth, is there a better time to go when the mosquitos are not too bad? Would love to take my wife, but she would be miserable... for some reason she is always the one who the mosquitos swarm around.

Fired up to go. Got the Engel installed on the left rear fender well in the 83 110. Need to try and remove the 2nd row door tops this evening after grocery shopping. Raub started driving up from Florida a couple hours ago.

Sounds like an awesome trip. Will be something I'll have to look into for the future. Update your bug thread with what you went with and the results.

I owe you a call back...long story short (besides me being a slacker on returning messages):
1) I dropped my phone in the lake, have been battling with AT&T and the insurance company about who was going to pay for my new one...finally got the replacement yesterday after almost a week ,
2) the wife decided to schedule the daughter's baptism for this weekend...I was *hoping* that we would not go with this weekend, but we're working around an elderly family member that is a minister so had to wait and see what worked from that end.

I'm bummed....trip sounds legendary.

Been by Portsmouth many of times, but never actually set foot on the island. Known plenty of people who have been and they've all had good things to say, except about the mosquitoes (apparently numerous and ferocious).

When my wife and I were in undergrad at UNC-Wilmington, we'd drive up to Chincoteague Island, VA, opting for the scenic route along the Outerbanks. Starting in Wilmington, we'd drive north through Morehead City & Beaufort to catch the Cedar Island Ferry to Ocracoke. We'd stop for lunch at Howard's Pub and then to the north end of the island to catch the ferry to Hatteras, and then take Hwy 12 all the way up to Kitty Hawk before heading for Norfolk, The Bay-Bridge Tunnel, and then the Eastern Shore. Always a great summer trip, especially in my old 90 with the top off!

At any rate, have fun! And, don't let the mosquitoes carry and you away!

Damn... so upset to miss this trip. I'd like to do it again in late autumn if they don't decide to ban vehicles.

Yep. BTW we have 4g out here as well. Mark brought his 4wd suburban pulling the Canadian m101 he's been rebuilding. The ferry had 4 110's an escalade and Mark's suburban and trailer right in the middle. Raub had to come over on a later ferry. This place is awesome. The Belgian triple is free flowing nearly everywhere we stop.

We left Hitman Bobby camping on the beach last night in a very remote area, wind was really blowing and his tent was looking questionable.

There is a single Ranger on the island after the last ferry leaves ea day and the guy wears body armor and a glock. Raub and I have already had run in's with the guy. He knocked on the cabin door and I opened it and he started stammering (guess I intimidated him ).
Then Robert came out and talked his ear off until he left...
