Places in Northern IL/WI area?

Aside from Cliff's or Badlands, where do people go in the Northern Illinois Wisconsin area? I'm not really looking for full blown off road parks. Something more like unpaved forest/fire roads, slightly technical, but not crazy.Thanks.

Head to the UP.
There used to be the Pipeline and McCaslin Mtn near Mountain, WI but they're both closed.

UP is pretty magical. Some pretty tough trails up there and some easy.
The 4wheel club at Michigan Tech was a lot of fun. One of the guys In the club at the time had a sweet classic Chevy truck with a winch off a ship or something like that was Pto driven mounted in the bed. Dragged my ass up a large number of hills.
Not sure what's actually on a map up there so to speak, but many trails. You'd want to go up there with a group of people. The logging trails can swallow you pretty quick.
If you were really interested guys in the club could help you out. MTU 4x4
It's been a while since I've been back that way to 4wheel (10+ years) so not sure what help or advice I'd be now.

Check out UPOverland.com
They run an annual trip type thing in early August.
Here's pics from a 3 day trip I did last fall.

Nice trip! Good loop to see the highlights of the great UP.
A lot of the two track people would think exist up in the UP are now 4wheeler/Utv/snowmobile trails. Most have been snowmobile trails for decades but the popularity of Utvs has really brought year round life to the trail system.
I can't say that the UP has ever really had a great full size 4wd offroad trail system. Most of the time it was making the best out of the logging and access roads that were there. Any marked trail or dirt road you could find on a map you could generally do in a Subaru. Great for cruising but not extreme. But a beautiful spot nonetheless and a great road trip experience. There are some great marked trails but you really need to know which is which.
Lots of decades of overuse in the Keweenaw has also closed many popular areas unfortunately. Some of the former trails on the point of the peninsula were an amazing ride and breathtaking views. But too much use and littering unfortunately closed them.

I grew up in the U.P. Plenty of old logging roads. Plenty of mud too. Driving to the tip of the Keewanaw is pretty cool.
