Currently looks like Friday evening and a bit of Saturday morning will be wet, but it'll be clear and nice the rest of the time.

Expo East was way different than the 2014 event I last attended. They had over 160 vendors, all kinda of great education through the Camel Trophy training. The Biltmore was an awesome upgrade from the farm the y had used prior. No wheeling though, just time to meet up with old friends and make new friends. This may be a good event to think about moving forward...

Cummins 2.8 Crate engine program roll out display

My primary reason for attending was to meet and talk with Steve from Cummins about the 2.8 Cummins common rail crate engine program Carl made us all aware of. The program isn't being introduced until the first week of November @ SEMA where pricing will be announced but hints were it would be in the $6k range with wiring harness and ecu. The engine is 50 state compliant for vehicles up to 2000 or so. The engine can be programmed for that level emissions and will produce 160 some odd hp and 280 ft lbs or torque (the important number) or if emissions are not of concern, a second tune is available with 200 some odd hp and over 400 ft lbs of torque. There are no hardware changes between the two output ratings. Since this will be a newer approved engine configuration it will in theory be legal for install into all defenders whether 25 yr old imports or NAS spec trucks. The engine will come complete with everything but an a/c compressor which is available for a bit more $.
The injection pump has its own high pressure fuel pump so the engine is pretty much plug and play requiring only 3 wires hooked up to run but with a myriad of options available including canbus.
Most importantly unlike many defender engine swaps the engine will come with a full factory warranty- details again to be released @ SEMA.
Steve drove the Jeep the engine is pictured in down from Indiana to Asheville @ 70-75 nmph getting economy/mpg in the 30's. He indicated the worst economy they have seen in playing with many different configurations is 25 mpg. The inter cooler used for this display/test truck was way too big for the application and effected those numbers for the worse.
Turbo is on the right side of the engine so zero issues going into a lhd truck and given how nicely it was tucked against the block not likely to be an issue on rhd. Engine is running in these pictures, no noticeable vibration in the steering wheel off idle like there is with many diesel engines, very smooth. The engine weighs in @ 500 lbs so in line with what a tdi or Rover v8 weigh, ie no suspension changes required to compensate.

TBD. Advance adapters is the only one in the aftermarket that has access to the engine to engineer adapters so far.

Prolly the acceptance that our overreaching gov't would never allow such a dangerous vehicle to be imported(I foresee the 25 yr rule being rescinded), since we aren't smart enough to not import it ourselves.

Let us remember that Unobtainium pertains to only 300M or so Americans, and Canada. For the other 7 billion on so the planet, that combo is still available new. Yeah, production ceased, but there are a ton of brand new 90, 110, and 130 trucks still avail in Europe. Puma - Better seats, doors that don't electrolysis themselves to death, complicated electronics, and factory water leaks standard.

That Heritage would be well equipped with something like this, the bed folds up into a couch/side seats, gives one headroom to stand, and can either sleep stealth below or use pop up tent:

It is funny to see Expo reflected in a positive light on this forum. Have read post about it and ExPortal here, mocking polishing jerry cans and which khaki color shows up best in Instagram. All in good fun. For my benefit, better tech here, better "adventure" there.

I am very bummed we are out of country and missed Expo East, and are going to miss URE. We did Expo two years running, and very much enjoyed, even in the rain. It ia also nice to see the cool toys from here, Aus, and SA making an appearance. ExTec, Hesch, Nakatanenga and others seems to understand there is a decent US market.

But we did make Abenteur und Allrad. 80,000 people attend that one.

The popular swap here is replacing Puma 2.2/2.4 motors with Ford Transit diesel. DuraTorque here, AKA 3.2 PowerStroke in US. 200HP/300FtLbs. Then easy remap to 250/400. All with most parts at Ford counter, and know the MT85 or ZF juicebox bolt right up.
