Outter Banks

Kinda short notice, but some friends and I are going to Ocracoke this weekend for some camping and beach driving. Nothing much but sitting around the campfire on the beach...mmmm, can't you smell the dump cake already???

I'll be down there with some FJs if anyone is interested. Plan on camping at the national park campground Fri and Sat night. Right now weather looks about 50/50, but were going hell or high water.

At least the Mosquitoes will not/ should not be out in full force yet. Where are you coming from? Through Hatteras or Swan Quarter?

I'll be in Ocracoke for three or four days starting on Monday. Trying to squeeze in a day of wreck diving before I go home.

Through Hatteras. I read that some activists for some birds or turtles or something have limited the driving on the beach to 10PM. A lot of people are up in arms about the tourist trade in Ocracoke. Oh well.

They almost banned it completely. If that were to happen it would kill alot of tourism in the area. Don't get me wrong i am all for the enviroment, but I grew up on those beaches and some people that are not even from there are trying to change a way of life. They really need more Wildlife officers on the beaches or people in general could just be more responcible. You get a couple of idiots out there and ruins it for the rest of us.

Sorry for the rant.

I thought Wren-Ching would jump in here first. It's 2 cans of cherry filling, 1 box of chocolate cake filling, and 1 stick up butter cut in quarters, all just "dumped" into a dutch oven (cherry filling first) and cooked for about 30-45 minutes. Turns out pretty good. We had some while at Uhwarrie Safari.

Brian, you are correct.

Most individuals there are attempting to change something they no very little about. All of the beach driving south of Whalebone Junction is the responsibility of the National Park Service, under the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. One of the most recent Superintendents helped the environmentalist, when he willfully allowed beach driving in an endangered species area, can't remember if it was a turtle or a bird.
Regardless, this was a close call for a fun area for beach driving and I'm sure there will be more fight's to come. People do need to drive more responsible on the beach, because it is the few that will ruin it for the majority.

Did you happen to vacation there a lot, or did you grow up at the Outer Banks?

flippedrover, you don't see many Park Service Law Enforcement Officers, as there aren't that many, and there is a large area to cover.

Neil, Hope the weather holds out for you.

More like mild jealousy. Thanks for the recipe though!

The closures are based on bird nesting of some kind. I was reading the links previously, but can't seem to locate them now.

Yep, and this doesn't help matters. I'm leaning towards environmentalist doing this to increase the protected zones.

But, who knows.

Hartman- My family owned a business in Kill Devil Hills and a cottage close to the memorial. I grew up about 2 hours East. I spent alot of time down there and have been surf fishing since i can remember. I drove my first vehicle out at the Inlet. If you drive out on the beach, there are huge sections already roped off for nesting.

The links below are the organzations involved.

I had to edit your post - punctuation goes inside the close-quote.
