Does anyone have an old computer (desktop/tower) that uses a SATA HD? My wife's Dell crashed recently. (Lost both the power supply and motherboard.) She had some files on it she'd like to recover. I bought an external HD enclosure, but the first thing it wants to do is initialize the HD which would wipe everything I'm after. The help line guy said that since the HD is formatted to be bootable, the best bet is to install in another computer in place of the existing drive and try to boot the PC using my drive. That would allow me to retrieve the files. Then, I'd reinstall your drive and give right back to you. I have an old Tower here, but it was pre-SATA drive, so it won't work. I know none of us hoard old stuff! If anyone can accommodate, I'll be at HH. Thanx.

Ron - I have an external port for SATA drives. You just need to plug it into a working computer/laptop via USB or eSATA, then drop the drive from your wife's computer and you should be able to read and retrieve her files. I'll bring it if you'd like.

The enclosure should work too. Bring it and a USB drive to copy the files to, and I'll bring a laptop running linux which shouldn't need to do anything to access the disk in the enclosure.

When do we move to the Caymans? Based on Kenny's sightings recently, that's the place to be.

Funny to think that their are so many LRs in a place so close to salty seas....everything rusts 25% quicker closer to the sea.

There's nowhere to go. You can walk the entirety of grand cayman in about an hour. OK I'm exaggerating. Two hours.

Good point...BUT, Defenders aren't controlled by the U.S. Gestapo - and you can scuba dive to your hearts content. Just sayin'....

Bill, you're not fooling anybody. We know you're secretly coveting seafood!

Will do. Windows would let me see the drive, but would only allow initialization. It would not let me see anything on the drive. Perhaps Linux is the solution. Otherwise, thinking about going to Goodwill and pick up a POS PC that I can attempt booting up.
