MAR '08 Oak Ridge Estate...

The 2008 MAR will be held at the Oak Ridge Estate. Lots of trails, lots of challenges, and many bypasses if you don't want too much challenge...These trails will be guided, but we're working on the actual arrangement of the "guiding" right now so there's minimal impact.
Anyway, much bigger site...4800 acres v. Pearls' Pond 415 acres.
One of ROAV's members has been a trail guide at this site for Camp Jeep(in his Rubicon) but he'll have his tDi D-90 present for MAR!
So....I hope there's not too much grief about the guided trails. It will be a little more organized than previous MARs but the drastic change in venues will be worth it....this is truly an incredible piece of property.

Absolutely nothing major in the 60 miles between Charlottesville and Lynchburg on Rt 29. Couple of little places like the Fork Union Motor Lodge (but probably not that nice). My parents and my brother Cabell's farms are about 40 miles away. He's doing a TDI conversion on his 110 pickup next month, I'll stop and get info on the different motor lodges along 29 when I head down. Another option is the ski resort Wintergreen (in the same county-higher elevation), and there are a couple of little cabin type places up around Crabtree Falls on the edge of the Natl. Forest. Nelson County is primarily mountainous- ideal for four wheeling and MAR, but not much there in the way of amenities. I think the biggest thing in that county, other than Wintergreen, is the Food Lion in Lovingston about 7-8 miles from the Oak Ridge estate .

Thanks for any info you can find. I normally book 8-10 rooms at the Fork Union so anyplace like that would work fine. Just need a roof over our heads and a hot shower.

Here's a couple of places:
Village Inn Hotel
(434) 263-5068
8010 Thomas Nelson Hwy
Lovingston, VA

Hilltop View Motel
(434) 263-5959
2267 Thomas Nelson Hwy
Arrington, VA

Brick House Inn
(434) 263-8676
Lovingston, VA

We're doing something down there at the end of March and staying at the Village Inn so I'll report back what it's like. For MAR we'll probably camp, but then again...having a shower and real bed might be nice.

From my understanding Primitive camping will be on site at Oak Ridge. However, if you don't want to camp on site you can check out Montebelo camp ground and Misty Mountain campground. Both camp grounds have a limited number of cabins. They are both about twenty minutes away from Oak Ridge. If you want a shower check out the hotels in Waynesboro, about 35 minutes, Charlottesville about 45 minutes, or Lynchburg about 40 minutes away. Plenty of Hotels to stay at. You could also say at Wintergreen Resort. They have both rooms and houses to rent. If you get a group together then a house might not be too expensive.

so it's more money, guided trails and no amenities. WTF? I am fine with all of it if you could get us shitters and showers that have actual plumbing.

Last I heard they were trying to work out the shower deal. No actual plumbing in the camping area however. I haven't heard what the registration is going to be, but do not think it will be much more, if any, than last year?

My thoughts exactly. I mean it's a long drive from Chi-town. Longer in a D-90. So if they can't even get showers, which you can rent (They have semi trailers with private showers that pull up. No water or anything else even needed) makes me wonder what all the fuss is about. I cringe at trail leaders as well. Spent years in a club and can honestly say not for me anymore.

Think I'll try the great lakes ralley. Minnesota is awesome in August and the terrain is comparable.

Whoa wait a minute... ROAV is planning on keeping the fees the same as last year, Trail leaders just means that the guy in front knows where he is going (many, many more trails than Pearl's Pond) and some sort of shower accessibility is being discussed for the primitive camping on site but there are great camp grounds with facilities very close. The organizers are working hard to put on a great event and in the past the MAR has been the largest Land Rover gathering in North America so the "60th" should be great!

I'm dissappointed to see so much resistance to "guided" trail rides.
You don't go to the National Rally in MOAB and ride the trails unguided. I know our trails are not as *remote* or hazardous as MOAB or Colorado but the trails at Oakridge cover 5000 acres and about 26 miles so it's concievable that people could get quite lost.

The organizers will be working with the trail guides to make the *guiding* as minimally invasive as possible.
