Mark Garrenton and I got a lecture from some goofy panicking guard on the rear gate up by the porta-johns not at the road, because we ignored the one way signs that were only posted AfTER the point where we were stopped... ie we couldn't have seen the signs even if we were looking for them.
The guard wanted us to turn around and drive all the way to the road and then take the front entrance.
We politely explained that we were camped 25 yards away and he reluctantly agreed to let us through just this once.
We never saw anyone on that gate again... WTF.
The whole scenario made no sense because if they wanted to limit driving, we would have had to drive 10 times further: drive back to the road, in the main gate, and up to camp, much further than to our camping spot.

Having run several MARs, you are always at the mercy of the property owners whimsical mood swings and eccentric attitudes.
Often unrealistic and selfish, they sometimes want to "take their bat and ball" and have everyone play elsewhere.
It sucks, but in the same situation pacification is the only option.
The trouble is that the people running the event did little to impose practical passification.
They were so focused on the property owners desires they overlooked the needs of the campers that paid good money to attend.
This flavor of poor judgement is not unique to Expo East management, its rampant in all society.
Common sense is the most uncommon of all.

Bottom line is that I am thankful that someone will hold an event like this that we can all attend, enjoy, and relax for the weekend.
It was a nice get away focal point for a broader group geographically speaking and was a of of fun.

In spite of the short comings and mismanaged rain situation, this was a first time Expo East and with any luck will get better.
There was a wide variety of vehicles and attendees that made the event interesting, a hell of a lot more interesting that your typical off roading event that we can go to much more frequently.

I think most any event that brings people together and brings extra tourism and funds to a local economy is a good thing. It was the first year and will of course have it's growing pains. Lots of new people (expo employees) unsure of the rules and how to impose them in a friendly way...and then the property owners concerns about having an entirely new group of people and their vehicles on their property for the first time.

In Texas we have a lot of people moving here from out of state buying up properties from the older and retiring locals...or their children who have inherited and just want the cash. The original owners enjoyed having people use their land to have fun but now the mentality is 'Get off my land or I'm calling the cops!'

One of my favorite places to camp and hike was thankfully donated by it's owners to the state and turned into a park, so it will forever be open to the public. Just like every other fun event, I wish the people of Expo the best of luck. Maybe just find a different, less manicured ranch...

I guess we all ran amuck of their heavy handed ways of dealing with a little rain @ an off road event. Trey and I ran out for skewers so we could grill shrimp and scallops early afternoon on Friday during the rain. We left via the front gate and nothing was said but 15 mins later when we returned the wouldn't let us back to the camping area.
I got sent to the registration desk since I wasn't hearing it. I was asked "what are your driving"?. My response, a Defender 110 on 33's, no way my vehicle will do anymore damage than the side by side utes you have running all over. Response, "yeah but if we let you through everyone else we have told no to will riot". Just then one of the ute drivers walks up and says "I'll escort him back they are camped just past the end of the pavement".
Glad I wasn't forced to camp in the front fields along the road like so many ended up doing.

Wow! That is heavy handed and doesn't sound very welcoming. That needs to change right away. Laid back anyone?? It does make me have a whole new respect for my friends who put on our 20+ kayak races every year. To be able to talk to all of the ranch owners who's properties have the rivers flowing through them spanning hundreds of miles and to have them all allow for us good time strangers to portage, allow for us to drive onto their land multiple weekends every year and bank support or just hang out and cheer. I'm once again impressed by the comradery and community. The races have brought so much to local economies that new restaurants and bars have sprung up along the rivers and they look forward to the times of year when the races are held. It's almost a year wait to reserve some of the local hotels.

I've bugged you guys for a year to take a break and enjoy like minded people who cherish the same marque, and finally the peer pressure was too much.
You have to admit the break was worthwhile and the warm welcome enjoyed by all.

Next year there will be similar events with a good off roading venue.
Please join the rest of your "official clan" for some well deserved down time.
