Let us know what you discover. I've always been interested in incorporating a route through there on a trip to the Keys

Bear island trails are closed until August 2, but we went to the permit office and got our truck registered so we don't have to come back to the oasis visiter center to get it next time. We decided to check out loop road which is just a gravel road that loops around 41. Not much to see except a few little fishing spots. I was told once the bear island trails open up they are a more challenging ride. The good thing is too that that whole area stays dryer because of its slight elevation. Which some of you might like the sandy slop mud but me I'm not a huge fan. Permit is $50 and it's good till January Inspection is free (tires must be at least 9inches wide and must have working 4x4) Registration is free (must have proof of insurance, registration and drivers license) We plan on coming back in August

So we decided to head up to bear island even though the trails are closed. The ride up there was very scenic looked like a picture out of Africa. We found a few deer running along side our truck and when we did get to the camp site at bear island we even got a glimpse of a Linux stalking a bunny. On the drive back we found a gator in the middle of the road and got a few photos of him. We took a different route back, taking upper then lower wagon wheel trails. Then 29 to Janes scenic drive. Janes scenic drive is one of those road they forget to scrape, lots of big potholes but still fun to drive. We went about half way and then turned around and headed to Everglades city for lunch. We ate at City Seafood, a little pricey considering you eat outside and it's mostly fried food. But I had the blackened grouper and coleslaw it was delicious!
Pictures and videos coming soon
