Engine install party in NOVA - Sun June 24th

It's the day you've all been waiting for. Ok, the day I've been waiting for. I should have my engine Saturday, but to play it safe, I'm scheduling the install for Sunday.

I expect it to go smoothly, but come one, come all. Worst case we'll shoot the shit and drink beer if it goes fast

P.S. This weeks special guest seaker will be Jim Pendleton. He'll be discussing fast engine swaps and providing guidance as needed. :D

He'll have to chime in as I don't know if he plans on staying in town past Sunday evening/monday.

Unless you count Sunday evening at my place

Warden has some family stuff to take care of on Sunday and I'll still be house sitting for a friend with the kids so I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to make it although, I do really want to help.

Great to hear guys! But don't come before 11am unless you just want to shoot the shit with Neil and I. Pendy is running late and I don't expect him (and the engine) to be here before then.

Thanks for coming out guys (and Loic and Neil).

I consider it a very productive day despite the late start and the hiccups, but we didn't get her running. When hooking up the starter we noticed some weird electrical behavior, similar to my previous poor ground issues I had in the past. We pushed on, but at the point of being able to attempt to start it, we have no power at the coil.

I'll let you know more once I get time to start troubleshooting it.

Again thanks for coming and helping put, I really appreciate it. I'm regretting not doing the photo shoot of 3 [running] defenders in my driveway, but have an idea for a new one. A different colored one in each bay, which a caption of "mmmh, which one should I drive today". Neil's (and expect Tony's) are too tall to fit in my garage, so Greg and Loic you'll have to come back once mine is running!

You got it! Although the caption should read "Which one should I work on today."

Charles, double check the connection at the ign. module -- it was REALLY tight against the PS pump housing and may not be completely seated (though I think it was). Did you connect the ground strap to the back of the DS head?

I'll check all connections for sure, but I'm guessing it's going to be something real simple like a ground wire to the starter or something since with negative terminal disconnected (including my custom ground to the rear lights) i get a small spark when touching the negative terminal to the seat box. This means I have a short somewhere.

How may wires should I have to the main starter terminal? I think I have 3. I might have hooked a ground to it instead of the bell housing

Ok the good news is I found the problem. One of connectors at the firewall wasn't connected properly. That got me spark again.

I had talked to Pendy about my oil pressure light not lighting up, so he suggested I wire up a bulb since the switch shorts to ground until pressure builds up, and then breaks the circuit once pressure is up. So I did that and pulled the plugs again and had to turn it over for quite some time until pressure built up. But very glad I did that.

So I put the plugs back in and by this time the battery was dying and either she was flooded or the timing is too far off and I gave up trying to start it. Tomorrow I'll get one of my kids to turn it over so I can check the timing with a timing light.

Anyway, feeling pretty good about things.

LOL, blame it on Carl.

I didn't have any luck yesterday (even changed the timing 180 deg but seems even less willing to start). Today I got hit by a bug the kids just had, so no progress. Tomorrow I'll put the distributor back to where it was and see. I think before the plugs were just completely soaked with gas.
