Driving a TD5 130 in Tanzania

I thought I would share some of the photo's from my last trip with my sister to visit my parents in Tanzania. I had the pleasure of driving a TD5 powered 130 the majority of the time I was there and thoroughly enjoyed it. We went on a 5 night hunting trip during the rainy season in south/east Tanzania and really put the Land Rover to the test. We also took my dad's Nissan Patrol with a straight 6 diesel and it performed admirably. The Land Rover ended up leaking clutch fluid so I had to drive without a clutch for part of the trip and we actually ran out of diesel just as we got to camp at around 0100 hours...what a pain to get started again! The Nissan of course ran flawlessly!

Enjoy

This first group of photos are taken as we left Dar Es Salaam and headed south

After driving ALL day and late into the night and having gotten stuck repeatedly, we finally made camp. The last photo shows us on our way out hunting...

I actually just got called into work so the saga will continue later

We hunted near the small village of Kilwa and were kilometers from anything remotely resembling a road. The beauty of taking two vehicles was that we were able, for the most part, to haul each other out as we got stuck time and time again. It was interesting the different driving styles necessary between the TD5 and the Nissan straight six. With the Td5 you really had to throttle it to get the turbo involved to get power to get through stuff, the straight six diesel had much more power at a lower rpm.

To think that here in the USA we look for places to do this....at home, these type of trails are the rule not the exception

At one point during our trip, we had to make a few hour detour in order to get some antibiotics for an infection I developed and on the "main" road, we came upon a nasty mud hole...for the first time in my life we managed to get both our 4x4's stuck so we were unable to use one to pull the other...

After much digging and with the assistance of some friendly people riding by on their bicycles, we were able to get the Nissan out and in turn pull the 130 free

This shows a wooden bridge we crossed that I truly believe would have collapsed had both vehicles been on it at once. But, we made it

We got stuck so many times it grew rather comical...at one point my mom, who was following in the Nissan just lost control and drove off the road. We kept the log chain in the bed of the 130 as we needed it a couple times an hour

My dad being the eternal optimist that he is thought he would be able to make it through this "Korongo" (ravine) even though I told him there was no way. He took the Nissan into it and literally came to a stop once his rear tires hit the incline on the other side.

What was funny was that as soon as he was stuck, he got out and told me to drive the Nissan in reverse while he pulled me with the Td5! What fun that was! With both diesel's bellowing and 8 tires spinning, I was frantically turning the steering from lock to lock as I got the Nissan straightened out to make it up the other side in reverse.

After five nights in the bush we finally made it back to civilization. As is typical in much of Africa, the women do the majority of manual labor so I took this photo as we were filling up with diesel...It's a little bit tougher to fill our extended tanks in this manner

Wasn't sure if people on here would be offended by dead animals so I did not include any of those photos...

This was a very TOUGH hunting trip as the mud was a bit overwhelming but it was an absolute blast and the vehicles made it very memorable for me.

Thanks for looking
Frank

What an awsome trip of a lifetime! Thanks for sharing, I gotta say though, some mud tires would have helped out a little.

P.S. You can take the hunting pics to the mud pit, I would love to see them.

Thanks for sharing! i need to get off my ass and post up my botswana pics at some point here. I was also thinking that they need to pony up and get some mud tires. that and a proper snatch strap...and a pullpal would do them wonders.

The tires were Goodyear Wrangler all terrains and were decent and were the best my dad's employers would spring for...

I'll put some hunting pictures up tomorrow if you wish

A snatch strap would have been nice! That and some lockers. Knowing what I know now, I would have made my dad get some KIT!

Here are a couple. The warthogs aren't the biggest I've shot but it is the first time I was able to get three together...all three with running shots. It was a blast
