2017 Mid Atlantic Rally - Official Thread

2017 Mid-Atlantic Rally (MAR)

Dates: October 5 - 8, 2017
Location: 100 Hoges Orchard Ln, Pembroke, VA 24136 (37°18'50.8"N 80°35'07.8"W)

REGISTRATION LINK

REGISTRATION:
Early Bird registration lasts through Sep 10. This includes the reduced price of $99 and includes a free t-shirt. Registrations after Sep 10 will cost $120 and will not include a free t-shirt.

Participants within the same family membership can bring an extra vehicle for the cost of $25.

TRAILS:
There will be trails available for all skill levels.

• Beginner / Stock Trucks (over 8 miles of fire roads)
• Intermediate / Modified Trucks
• Intermediate to Advanced / Modified Trucks
Remember – TREAD LIGHTLY

All trail rides will be guided. (We are seeking volunteers to be guides!)

We are pleased to announce that the property manager will allow us to travel through the lower fields across the street from the rally camp area to gain improved access to the trails. This negates the need to drive the 7 miles to the top of the mountain and enter there like we did last in years past. The lower fields will be stocked with cows and as a condition of this access, we must have guides escort trucks. Please remain with the group guides and be respectful of the property owner and his livestock to ensure that we can hold future events here.

Finally, ROAV is not responsible for the safety or vehicle recovery of any attendee that sneaks off without a guide and finds themselves all alone and in a tough spot.

EVENTS:
This year we hope to expand slightly on the events. We will continue to host the Rovers North sponsored RTV course. We will also add to this a Blind Race. The Blind Race consists of a blindfolded driver and a seeing-eye navigator. The navigator must communicate with the driver and get them to negotiate through an obstacle course. Points for speed and accuracy. This event will take place roughly the same time as the RTV to allow you to take part while waiting for your turn at the RTV.

CAMPING/LODGING:
Primitive camping is available onsite. Tents, campers, and trailers are all allowed. The short road in to the rally area may not be friendly to oversized rigs (large RV’s or 5th wheel trailers) but standard sized campers and trailers should have no problem. Flat ground is at a premium, so please plan ahead and bring plenty of leveling blocks.

There are no electricity or plumbing facilities. Port-a-Loos will be provided.

There is access to a hose bib that is attached to a natural spring. This was used in the past to supply drinking water for livestock. The water source has not been tested by health authorities but locals drink the water – and so does Bob Steele – if that is any measure of suitability.

Generators are allowed. Rally participants should remember to be courteous with generators and mindful of the noise. We ask that all generators be shut down by 11:00pm.

Hotel accommodations can be found nearby at Mountain Lake Hotel or at any of the various hotels in Blacksburg, VA. Rally participants are on their own if they wish to secure a hotel room and these costs are not included in the cost of registration. There is not a VA TECH home football game this year so more hotel options should be available but you are still encouraged to book early.

CAMPSITE THEME CONTEST:
This year we will have the added feature of a Campsite Theme contest. We are looking for the campsite with the best decorations or theme - the sky is the limit. There will be a $125 prize awarded to the winner.

MEALS:
There will be a vendor on site providing meals for Saturday evening. The cost of meals has been lowered to $15 per person. Please pre-purchase meal tickets as there will only be a limited amount of on-site ticket sales for meals.

Below is a sample menu;
• Pulled pork BBQ (2 types of sauces on the side) w/ buns
• Coleslaw
• Roasted new potatoes
• Green beans
• Garden salad (Italian)
• Fresh baked brownies
• Unsweetened ice tea / Lemonade

T-SHIRTS:
Early Bird registration gets one short sleeve t-shirt include with your registration. Extra t-shirts are available for purchase for $20. Please note that after September 10, t-shirts quantities will be limited and we may not have a large availability in all sizes for sale at the event.

FIRES:
Campfires are allowed at each campsite pending current weather and fire conditions. Please be safe with fires, keep a water source handy, and do not leave fires unattended. Check in with Rally Control to stay informed on current fire conditions.

RAFFLE:
Raffle tickets will be sold on site. We are already getting some great items in from our sponsors such as;
• Sarek Autowerkes
• Rovers North
• Lucky 8
• Hi-Lift Jack
• Atlantic British
• Series Defender Outfitters
• Mountain Khaki
• (more)

PETS:
Pets are allowed. Please remember to be courteous and safe with your pets and keep them leashed at all times.

Keep an eye on the Club's website and Facebook page for the latest updates.

Not sure what to do - the link works fine for me.

Nevertheless - the link is https://squareup.com/market/roav and you can also get to it from the www.roav.org web page.

Let me know if you are still having trouble. (Firemanshort@aol.com)

I am at a loss - maybe an admin can look at it?

At least you can go to the web page (www.roav.org) and follow the links there.

Reminder, Early bird ends on Monday.

Emergency items

Lets say you were driving 5 hours to the MAR event in your 1994 D90 with 99,000 miles. :-) While I feel like I have replaced every part on this truck at least once in my short ownership, I am usually still surprised when something else goes out.

What would be your suggestions to have along with me on the trip to and fro in case of breakdown (most common issues)? Im thinking along the lines of fan belts, radiator hoses, fluids of all types. Any specific list of items from you verterans of Defenders?

Next, for those whom have been there, any suggestions for the camp out? (Items definitely needed like maybe dry firewood etc...?)

Thanks in advance!

A lot of folks making that trek. Nova folks have at least 4 hours. Maybe plan to link up and convoy down. Safety in numbers. First night we struggled to find dry wood. Second/third day some good gents along with local land owner split a few cords of wood, warm fires. I'd bring "some" wood.

Duct tape saved my ass once. Axle shafts are always a popular choice too.

Won't be making it this year, unfortunately. New job taking me out of the country, so hope to catch up with everyone in the spring.

Greg:

My thoughts/experience on this is that you can almost always limp home with broken bits (diff, driveshafts, axles, CVs, etc, etc) by just removing the damaged part and making due with 2wd or similar. However, the *weak* point on the NAS EFI V8s tend to be the ignition parts - if the truck won't start, you're dead in the water.

As such (thanks to rlynch for the inspiration & input) I have an ignition "kit" that lives in my truck full time consisting of:

- plug wires
- rotor cap
- rotor arm/button (several of these, they fail more regularly than you'd think)
- ignition amp module
- ignition switch or ignition switch bypass harness (I can send you instructions for the bypass harness...these switches fail constantly as well)

Without the above you're dead in the water. With the above you're down for a few minutes tops.

.... to add to all of this good advice are the following nuggets,

- there is a Super Walmart about 15 minutes from the campground - this has normal fluids if needed.

- there are normal auto parts stores in Blacksburg and Christiansburg (30 minutes away) and Land Rover Roanoke dealership about 1:15 away from the MAR.

Will Tillery, a MAR sponsor, has a wealth of used parts and is planning to attend - see him at Rovaguy.com if you want to pre coordinate MAR delivery. The Lucky 8 team is planning on having a show tent with parts in it, too (I think). They are always good to call and arrange parts delivery.

Lastly - there is no shortage of kind souls with wrenches that are always there to help.

David, what can a day visitor expect to pay?

A local near me bought a Rover and might just want to wander the campground activities on Saturday; no trail rides.

Is your Land Rover a trailer-queen???

Trash talk aside, we are asking that all car hauler trailers be parked across US 460 in the Nanasonic parking lot. We are trying to minimize the surplus vehicles in the camping area and minimize the impact to the roads and ground.

This is especially true if we get rain. Last year we asked many folks to off load their trucks on the pavement across the street and then bring just the Rover in. Our guidance was not welcomed or heeded by all and we had some negative consequences from folks who thought they could drag that double car hauler up a mud-slicked hill.

Camper trailers are allowed but please help us by keeping car haulers out on the pavement.

Thanks!
