Engage brake. Set shift lever in Neutral position. Carefully pry between the handle and the cover, It is metal plate covered with glued-on wood veneer and it is easy to damage the wood. That will reveal a e-clip that holds the release button onto the release shaft. Undo the e-clip and pull the button up and out. There is a nut that holds the handle on the shift lever. Use needle nose pliers to undo the nut. The handle will pull off.
You can also pry up on the rear corners of the wood insert that holds the shift lever indicator and slide it up and off the shift lever. This will let you clean all the spilled coke and coffee out of the console and check the light bulbs.
