Thanks for the bump anyway.

VIN# SALDV2282SA966521 *It doesn't have a perfect report. Currently has 154,xxx miles It has been confirmed that it needs a new a-frame ball joint which I may fix next weekend unless it's sold before then. Other than the clonk, it drives perfect. It also needs a new heater core, which I planned on fixing during the summer. Both cheap/somewhat easy fixes if you can turn a wrench. I have installed a fiberglass hardtop which is in really good condition. I installed SW doors and never completed the door cards... the original doors will go with it as well. I also have the original wheels that will go with it. Here's a link to my registry http://www.defendersource.com/forum/...ad.php?t=42828 I'm asking $20,000 but will negotiate. I still owe a little bit of money to BB&T for the 90, so we can handle the transaction there or whatever you feel comfortable with. I have plenty of references within the Land Rover family of dealerships here in South & North Carolina. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or interests. Thanks!
Let's stay on topic.

I've seen a bunch sell for around $20k. Its not like he's looking for a $1,000 Defender that "needs head gaskets"...

I bought a NAS d90 for under $20k but I had to immediately pour well over 20 into it to just get it on the road and trustworthy. Might be worth increasing your budget. Often deals are not the deals they seem especially when it comes to defenders. Beware of the hiddens.

I hope he finds one for 20k. I'm just saying if there is an driving NAS of any flavor west of the Mississippi there is a buyer for it top dollar. Those three letters have significant value here in California. Not trying to shit up a thread...good luck OP.

If you find an automatic NAS SW for $20k, it is either going to be a piece of shit or you have found the deal of a lifetime. I do this everyday and I search for defenders for other people all the time. Most other people on this forum do as well. Raise your price to $25k or $30k and you will have more success. I'm not saying you won't find one, but the odds are very slim that it won't have significant mechanical and cosmetic issues and you'll wind up dumping $10-15k in it in less than 12 months.

If you want to be realistic, then everyone here will help you. Otherwise, I will sit back and watch this thread go nowhere.

Let's imagine a $20k NAS existed.
It could be:
1: Totalled by fire flood or accident
2: totally rusted out chassis and or bulkhead
3: mechanically useless drivetrain
4: all of the above.
5: in need of $10-15k in repairs just to get it legally on the road.

Airborne didn't you find yours on eBay? Honestly you'll find far more in your budget on craigslist by constantly stalking. Yes there are a couple that come up for $20k every couple of months, but you're far from the only one looking to get into one cheap. Automatic implies 1997, which I have not seen at $20k for quite some time and when it did everyone (including airborne above) passed on it because it was too much of a project for him or his friend.

Good point! It was listed on eBay briefly but I bought it directly from the owner after the listing ended. I just happened to fall upon my 97. What I should have said is to be wary of overpriced Defenders on eBay and autotrader.

I paid over $30k for my 94 ST and I have had a lot of work done since then. I feel that the price I paid was a great bargain considering the restoration work the previous owner did as well as the fact that it came with an ARB winch bumper, OEM suspension and lift, badger top, Lelo Fab rack and all the service history paperwork. You can look at my registry thread and see all of the additional things I have had to do since taking ownership.

I can promise you one thing, if I were to find a 97 in descent shape for $20k, you better believe I wouldn't tell anyone about it (except for y'all)!

This is a tough journey to find one that low! Personally, I would rather have a stick shift than the automatic. They are much more fun to drive and prices will be more reasonable.

Do like Josh says, stick to craigslist. The mobile version is much better. Enter all major cities in your search criteria and check it daily. Once it pops up, it won't last long!

Open a gmail account specifically for craigslist so that you don't care when most of the Inbox turns into Cialis meds discount alerts.

Offer this guy 25k… auto conversion especially a funky one without a factory console isn't going to help his resale value.

That's taber509 on this board. From what I recall that truck went for quite a bit less on Craigslist a year or two ago, so now that he's been unable to sell it at the $35k mark he may finally be a little more negotiable.

That's a Lokar shifter, it actually isn't a terrible install. We just did one for a customer, retains the stock appearance of the manual. It is also. Cheap alternative to the consoles, for the hardware shifter and brackets are about half the cost of just the console. I agree I would prefer an auto console but they are nice setups.
