worldtraveller in engine problems looks for help

Dear sir(s) /guys,

Me and my wife are driving a 1998 300 tdi defender 110 around the world. We are 12 months on the road. We did 6 moths Africa and now allready 5 months North America. Our blog is Twee jaar op reis

We are in grand canyon park and are having issues and problems with our engine. The car keep overheating so we haf to remove the thermostat so we could keep driving. We could make it to vegas or around there.

I am a mechanic myself and would like to dismantle the cilinderhead to see if the headgasket is blown or not. Otherwise the cilinderhead is probably cracked.

I am wondering if there is anyone who lives in the area who is willing to let us camp( our defender is our home) and work on the car at there place or at place that they know. We don't have a adress for parts right know and we don't know that many people. Not to say none.

Thanx in advance
Sam and Hanne

There will be a number of Land Rover owners speaking up here shortly.

Is your Defender a Tdi/Td5 or Puma Tdci type? Lets see some pictures!

Welcome!

If you don't get a response here, try Expedition Portal. I know in a week a bunch of Land Rovers will be gathering in Sedona so you might try reaching out to the Western National Land Rover Rally staff to see if they can help you out.

I have to ad we can still drive slowly so the area we are looking is big. We can move around.
We drive allready 450 miles with the problem so we can manage for sure the same distance.

You mention a possible cooling leak, are you loosing coolant and is there oil in the coolant reservoir ?

If you've lost the seal on the head gasket, there may be excess pressure in the reservoir you could feel with the cap off and your palm over the opening.
