Wanted - RR diffs for my Series III

So, I hear that early RR diffs will fit my series and give it much better highway gearing. If anybody has a set that is gathering dust, let me know.

1st gear might even be usfull after the swap, because I normally just start off in 2nd.

Think I have a set of 10 splines in storage, I'll check when I'm on that side of town, probably tomorrow.

I thought the only difference between the older Rangies (87-90) and neweer ones (91-95) was that they were 10 spline instead of 24 spline.

Are you looking for earlier than 87?

From what I have gathered using the web, the early (older than 87) RR diffs are still 10 spline but with a 3.54:1 ratio vice the 4.71:1 ratio on series trucks.

I guess I should have specified this.

The stock diffs on all 87-95 RRC and 94-99 DI are 3:54:1 (I believe).

But the pre-87's are also 10 spline. My series is a pavment queen, so I don't want to spend the effort or money to convert to a 24 spline axle.

I have a 92 rr m stripping so the whole front and rear axle assemblies could be made available.
Im keeping engine and trans, the rest is in limbo on if I want to store or not.
technically it is a rolling chasis as the inside is/ was gutted when purchased as a parts truck and I have peeled all the outside sheet metal...(fenders, doors, quarter pannel, hood).
the steering box is sold.
if interested let me know, you can have it for a decent offer the main caviat... Im in stafford Va
so transport an issue...

Thanks for the offer, but I really only want the early diffs. My defender is layed up while I swap in a 300TDI, so I don't have any space for a roller.

I have a diff or two (10 spline, 3:54) from a Rangie. I'll double check tonight and let you know.

RR are 10 splines up till 1993. 1994 they switched to 24 spline.

PM me with what you want for them. I am hoping for a local pickup to prevent giving all of my money to a shipping company.

You don't need the whole diff, the RR R&P will fit the Series carrier. I put a set in an 88 I converted to a Perkins 4.203 in '82.

Thanks for the advice. I will take a look at it and probably just add a fill plug. Is there any problem with just drilling and tapping a hole in the 3rd member? People do it with ARB's and such. I can then not weld on the housing and do the whole thing on the bench. I can just use a pipe plug to seal the hole.

shucks... for that matter and if you are willing to overhaul and set up your current carrier housings, I have two sets of 3:54.1 ring and pinion left from a 4:11.1 conversion.
let me have $50.00 for both plus shipping they are yours... they are just ring and pinion gear sets thou. front and rear and you get to keep all your other internals and the carrier housing.

Are you sure about this? Im pretty sure a RR R&P will not fit the series carrier. you will have to use the carrier from the RR as well and put the R&P and carrier in the Diff.

You can put the 4.7 series gears on the 3.54 carriers with a spacer ring but pretty sure it wont work the other way.
