VIN help/check/translation

Hey Guys, looking to finally make the jump from lurker to D90 owner and need a little help. Looking at a 97 st AA yellow, SALDV2245VA118912 and just want some help deciphering the autocheck. It came back good, but with indications of a possible loan/lien issue and duplicate title records. What does that mean exactly?

Super excited at the chance to become a D90 owner, just don't want to buy something that that has complicated title issues or something. Thanks

Not sure on the loan issue, but a duplicate title should just mean it was lost by a previous owner. I had to do one years ago, just took all my info into the DMV and that was all.

Checksums are the result of a mathematical calculation on a number that yields a number. This derived number when used with the original can be used to validate that the original number is correctly formed.

For example the last digit on a book ISBN number is a checksum. The calculation used can produce 0-11 as a result so ISBN checksums also have a X to represent 11.

They aren't foolproof but help

reduce transcription errors.

So what does the checksum mean in relation to the defender? On the link above it says the checksum for the vin failed, what does that mean for the truck?

You entered the wrong number. It's not a valid VIN. Nothing to do with the truck ... Maybe you wrote it down wrong, missed some digits, swapped numbers around ... A transcription error!

Your autocheck came out fine. Looks like all the other ones ive ran, just make sure that the Lien is paid off and the title they have is the most recently issued one and not one previously printed one that doesnt show the lien.
